When you see gluten-free fruit and nut bars in the airport newsstand, you know we’ve come a long way in our society’s awareness of food sensitivities. In my mere two years without gluten, I’ve gone from stuffing my suitcase with Larabars to ensure I don’t starve while away, to, well, still packing them, but knowing that I likely won’t be completely reliant on them the whole trip.
In addition to newsstand snack options, I recently discovered a Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport restaurant having a gluten-free menu. I was thrilled! I would sooner have expected to see a glatt kosher dining area!
The dramatic increase in gluten-free offerings makes me wonder: why the recent influx of news about gluten? Is it that so many more people are getting tested for celiac disease? Are more people questioning their ailing guts and attributing it to gluten? Read More »

Yes you read right – I made a pizza with an unconventional main crust ingredient – cauliflower. I wanted to try this recipe as gluten free pizza crusts are so expensive to buy and they are often loaded with sugar. I also love a challenge and to try new and different things.
I never thought I would have this problem but I actually don’t have a microwave – the recipe I used for this crust has an alternative though, to steam the cauliflower. However I don’t have a steamer either (or anything that I can use as a steamer as my colander is plastic). Still desperately wanting to make this pizza I decided to use raw cauliflower. And guess what – it worked! So the crust stayed together and looked good, and the pizza tasted awesome!
I would love to say that I was clever enough to come up with this recipe by myself but I actually got it from Recipe Girl.

Cold water, wild fish is a healthy, safe option when you’re shopping for fish. If you can find it at your local grocery, buy frozen, wild caught Pacific cod for this recipe. It’s usually easy to find. I have used quite a few brands of frozen cod to make this recipe and find the best quality frozen cod is available at Costco. At least that’s the case where I shop.
Be sure to thoroughly thaw the frozen cod and blot it with paper towels until the fish is dry to the touch. This recipe is a great way to prepare fish to make a batch of delicious fish tacos.

According to a Wall Street Journal article, The Gluten-Free Craze: Is It Healthy? (6/23/2014) — over 29% of people surveyed said they are cutting back gluten consumption or avoiding it completely.
Whether a gluten-free diet is a “craze” or fad for those not diagnosed with celiac disease or gluten-sensitivity is debatable. Important questions for anyone eating a restrictive diet — for whatever reason, should be, “am I eating a balanced diet? Am I eating optimal amounts of protein, healthy fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals for my individual needs?” Read More »

If you have ever enjoyed the experience of eating “pot stickers” before going gluten-free, you know how delicious and fun these savory Asian pan-fried dumplings are. They’re fun to make too!
Traditionally pot sticker wrappers – similar to wonton wrappers, are made with wheat flour. While I’ve thought about attempting to make a gluten-free wonton for some time, it wasn’t until I bought Laura B. Russell’s cookbook, The Gluten-Free Asian Kitchen that I actually went for it.
Our gluten-free pot stickers will stick to the pan, just like wheat-made pot stickers, so read the instructions carefully and then have fun making this recipe. Read More »

Gluten Free is heard everywhere nowadays. It’s seems to be as popular as the vegan diet years ago.
Unfortunately gluten free is not a fad, or a diet, it is a way of life for those with Celiac Disease and gluten sensitivity.
Those of us, including myself, need to check everything that we eat which can honestly be a royal pain, but the good news is that most places are gluten aware. There are those hole in the wall places in the middle of nowhere that we can never find anything to eat, but we can always pack a snack.
The first time that you go grocery shopping or out to eat can be overwhelming after being told that you Read More »
