A Delicious Meal at Getti, – And Why I Won’t Order Gluten-free Pizza or Pasta

Lois Parker Gluten Free Works Author

A quick trip to look at some furniture for the new flat – a desk that converts to a bed.  Didn’t order it, but did have a delicious meal at Getti, 42 Marylebone High St London.

I ordered the cod with tomato and chili sauce with green beans.  Usually when I eat in a restaurant I think I could have cooked better at home.  This time I realised I didn’t know how to cook fish at all.  It was exquisite, and this from a person who doesn’t really like fish, and can’t eat the stronger tasting ones without wanting to cry.

I had asked if they could feed me safely, and they said of course, one of their staff had coeliac disease, and they had good gluten-free pasta they imported from Italy, and made pizza as well.  Rod ordered pizza.  When the meal arrived Read More »

Abokado: Gluten Free Sushi in London

We were having a discussion at work a couple of weeks ago about how it’s very hard to find good sushi that doesn’t cost you an arm and leg in London.

Sliced duck sushiThen out of chance I stumbled across abokado the other day. I was looking for a small (cheap) snack to last me until I got home from my morning of sightseeing and so thought I’d go in and check the place out. Read More »

BOSTON, MA (March 19, 2012) – Millions of people will travel this season for spring break, school vacation and the Easter/Passover holidays, and for most of them, these trips mean fun, relaxation and wonderful adventures.  But for the 15 million people with food allergies (and their families), traveling can be a source of tremendous anxiety.  Dining in unfamiliar cities and restaurants – which may or may not be able to accommodate their special dietary requirements – can be extremely stressful.  Worrying about a possible allergic reaction compounds the problem.  But the food allergy community can depend on AllergyEats (www.allergyeats.com), the biggest and fastest growing source for finding allergy-friendly restaurants, to help them more comfortably dine out wherever they are – resulting in a more enjoyable, less stressful trip.

Applebee’s Offering Gluten-free Options

Gluten-free residents can add another restaurant to the growing list that will accommodate their needs – Applebee’s.  Applebee’s joins a host of many other restaurants that are now offering a list of menu items that don’t contain gluten.  As noted, this list is subject to change, so make sure to check back frequently.

As with any restaurant, there is always a risk of cross-contamination.  To help minimize the risk, ask to speak with the manager on duty.  Be sure to ask how the menu item is prepared and if it is cooked on surfaces or Read More »

Arby’s Offers Up Gluten-Free Menu [Updated April 8, 2017]

Over the past few years more & more restaurants have been adding gluten-free menus to their repertoire.  This is a much welcomed change to people who have had to follow the diet for any period of time.  Simply being able to order off of the menu and not bring food in from the outside is a pleasure.

Arby’s is the latest establishment in this explosion of gluten-free menus.  Arby’s has multiple meat items, several salads, drinks & even shakes on the menu.

The French fries and potato cakes are off limits due to cross-contamination issues; sharing the deep fryer with chicken fingers, chicken patties and mozzarella sticks makes them unsafe.

Betsy’s Bakery to Host Gluten-Free Candlelight Dinner On Valentine’s Day

Let me preface this post by noting that Valentine’s day is not a holiday I, personally, subscribe to. The cards, the flowers, the mush, the grand gestures, and all the things that some expect of this day…none of that is really my jam. So, last year, after I requested no frills or fancy dinners or grand gestures, my boyfriend, Mike, presented me with a terracotta pot with a yellow lily and some dirt in it. (Read: don’t scoff yet…) Upon further inspection, it turned out that the “dirt” was finely crushed chocolate cookie bits covering a blue Solo cup filled with his gluten-free version of cookies and cream ice cream (my absolute favorite) that he had mixed and made himself. This gesture seemed small to some in my life, but to me, the girl who hadn’t had cookies and cream ice cream in almost two years, it was the grandest gesture of them all.

That one grand gesture, when someone went out of his way to make sure that I could eat what I loved and not get sick is why the the candlelight dinner at Betsy’s Bakery in Camp Hill, PA is so important. This little bakery is hosting a reservation-only, gluten-free candlelight dinner on Valentine’s day this year. Taking your gluten-free sweetie to this dinner may be the gesture they’ve been looking for if you haven’t quite mastered the gluten-free vibe in the kitchen, or if you’re tired of going out to eat at the same “safe” restaurants all the time. California Pizza Kitchen Pulls Gluten-free Pizza Crusts

Kim Bouldin Gluten Free Works

gluten free california pizza kitchenEarlier this summer California Pizza Kitchen debuted gluten-free pizza on their menu. I was giddy. I loved CPK pre-gluten-free and couldn’t wait to go back and try their new pizza. Well,we did,and it was great, but our spirits were quickly dampened by the news that there could be major cross contamination issues going on in the kitchen.

I decided to go back and investigate to see what was going on and whether what I had heard about their procedures was indeed true. I was saddened by what I found out. While it had appeared that CPK went to great lengths to add the gluten-free pizza to their menu, they didn’t consider some of the most important issues. Cross contamination is real and can be very serious. Sure, some of those with Celiac Disease don’t react right away (or even at all),but some do and it isn’t pretty. This doesn’t even take into consideration those Read More »

Chevys Fresh Mex Launches Gluten-free Menu

[We have been informed Chevys no longer offers a gluten-free menu. 1/1/2017]

The chain is the third to introduce gluten-free items this month

Chevys’ Guac My Way guacamole is part of its new gluten-free menu. Instead of chips, the dish is served with corn tortillas.

Chevys Fresh Mex this week became the latest restaurant chain to launch a gluten-free menu in its company-owned locations.

Chevys’ launch follows the debut earlier this month of Domino’s Pizza’s new gluten-free crust and Chuck E. Cheese’s test of new gluten-free products, including a pizza and a cupcake.

The new menus, which cater to those with gluten-related disorders, have also raised controversy over whether restaurants can accurately label a menu item “gluten free” if there is a risk of cross contamination.
