Smart Balance Acquires Udi’s Healthy Foods for $125 Million Increases Stake in Gluten Free Market

John Libonati Gluten Free Works

Smart Balance Gluten FreeThe gluten-free food industry is exploding due to increased diagnosis of celiac disease and gluten sensitivity. Celiac disease is estimated to affect 1 in 100 people, while gluten sensitivity is believed to affect up to 10% of the population. The gluten-free market is one of the fastest growing industries, with 20%+ growth per year with US sales increasing from under $1 billion in 2006 to over $2.5 billion in 2011. With the potential market so large, more and more major corporations are getting into the act.

Smart Balance recently acquired Udi’s Healthy Foods, the industry leader in the gluten-free breads and baked goods category, for $125 million.  This follows Smart Balance’s 2011 acquisition of Glutino Foods, which was at the top of the gluten-free snack industry when purchased. Do You Make Your Own Gluten-free Bread?

Homemade Gluten Free Bread
I have often wondered what percentage of people following the gluten-free diet actually make their own bread.  I tend to use mixes to make sweet breads, but I usually buy my gluten-free bread off the shelf, or from my favorite local gluten-free bakery Pure Knead.

Most of us know that gluten-free bread has come a long way in the last five years, so there are a number of great options to be purchased at local health foods stores that don’t contain artificial ingredients and have the taste and texture of wheat-based bread.

Still, there seems to be a rising percentage of people who prefer to make their own gluten-free bread. Some of my favorite gluten-free bread mixes to use are: Read More »

Back on the Bread Wagon with Rudi’s Gluten Free Sandwich Bread

rudis gluten-free breadRecently I was sent a sample of Rudi’s Gluten Free sandwich bread and was blown away. For the most part, I had given up enjoying bread since becoming gluten free. I have enjoyed gluten free bread at restaurants  but as far as making a sandwich at home or enjoying toast for breakfast, it just wasn’t happening at home. There just didn’t seem to be a gluten free bread that I thought was worth buying much less that I truly enjoyed.

I can now say, I’m back on the bread wagon, and loving it. Rudi’s offers original, multigrain and a cinnamon raisin bread, all of which exceeded my expectations. I tried all of them toasted and un-toasted and honestly, have no complaints. To make sure I wasn’t just overly excited by having free bread sent to my house, I made my fiance try them all too. He is not gluten free and Read More »

Udi’s Gluten Free Buns and Ancient Grain Breads

Udi’s Gluten Free is launching their NEW line of Hamburger Buns, Hot Dog Buns and two varieties of Ancient Grains Breads this month… just in time for your summer BBQs!  I have been waiting for what seems like a very long time for Udi’s Gluten Free to make buns; I figured that since their bread is soft, delicious and doesn’t need toasting that their buns would be superior to others on the market.  I was right.

My family sampled Udi’s new gluten free buns and Udi’s new gluten free Ancient Grain Breads and they were a hit!  My daughter enthusiastically announced “I love Udi’s Hamburger Buns” at the dinner table; I especially liked them toasted on the grill.  I was impressed by how Read More »

Udi’s Bread: What’s UP with All the Holes??

I asked a few celiac friends if they had noticed a change in Udi’s bread. They all answered with the same statement; “Yes, it’s full of holes!”  I emailed Udi’s a few times, but never heard back from them. So I did what all good little bloggers do and posted a picture on my blog.

Udi's Gluten Free BreadI have no idea how many people have complained to Udi’s about their hollow bread, or if they are taking measures to correct it. They certainly have not asked for my two cents (imagine that!). But as a celiac with a nutrition and food science background I know that if you add too much yeast or baking powder in relationship to the flour; or you Read More »

Product Review: GFL Foods, Inc. gluten-free pita bread let’s you get stuffed

Whenever asked what product is thought to be missing from the thousands of available gluten-free products, my number one response is always gluten-free pita bread. In my 13 years on the gluten-free diet finding out about GFL Foods, Inc. gluten-free pita bread made my diagnosis. Gluten-free pita bread is one product that this Examiner has truly missed and is thrilled it has become available in the gluten-free market.

Rami Aharon, owner of GFL Foods, Inc., set out to create a gluten-free pita when his son was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. After several attempts, they finally created what they considered to be the ‘best ever gluten-free pita’ and this Examiner agrees. Read More »

Review of Udi’s Gluten-free Sandwich Bread

Anne_steib

I kept hearing numerous accolades about Udi’s Bakery in Denver, CO and their gluten-free foods. I would hear of people placing large orders with them and claiming their bread was the best of the gluten-free breads. So, I had to try this myself to see if the bread lived up to the hype.

UdiThankfully, I recently discovered they carry Udi’s at Woodman’s, who have an extremely large gluten-free section, and decided to try a loaf. Udi’s bread is handcrafted in their dedicated gluten-free facility in Denver, CO, their gluten-free foods are also dairy-, soy-, and nut-free. Read More »
