“Autism: Made In the U.S.A” film: what it has to do with Gluten

A new documentary produced by Gary Null, a natural health advocate and activist, takes aim at our modern medical establishment and the various ways it could possibly be contributing to chronic illness, neurological phenomenon and conditions, and specifically, Autism.

Null delves into the relationship between vaccines, food, environmental pollutants, the childhood Autism pandemic in America and what can be done about the increasing numbers. According to the Center for Disease Control, as of 2010, 1 in every 110 children will be diagnosed with Autism.

Autism: Made in the U.S.A is a compelling look into the world of children living with Autism and their families — the daily care requirements and the toll (emotional, social, and financial) it takes on families as well as the child himself. The film also highlights “alternative” methods that have been shown to be effective for many families in treating, easing, or eliminating their child’s Autism. Though these treatments have been shown to be effective for many kids via firsthand evidence, they’re still perceived as fringe, alternative, falsified, and unsafe methods. But for the families of children with Autism who have been able to experience a “spontaneous recovery” from the condition, nothing could be further from the truth. The families have nothing to gain from their stories of “spontaneous recovery”; they speak to help others and give them hope: they are fighting for their voices and powerful, albeit counterculture, messages to be heard: Autism is treatable. Their children are living proof. And in a culture where diseases are seen as permanent, and health as only able to be sustained with daily assistance from a pill, this message is not well-received.

The movie details that many children with Autism benefit from eliminating allergens from their diet. Gluten (the protein found in certain grains, like wheat, spelt, rye, and barley), and casein (the protein found in milk) are the two most important allergens to avoid. There are several reasons this diet can be beneficial for those on the Autism Spectrum, one of which being the link between the gut and cognitive function, development, and overall health and wellbeing (the gut often being called “The Second Brain” because it functions similar to the brain with its specific hormone receptors and cycles). Gluten and casein are leading contributors to Leaky Gut Syndrome and can cause foreign particles to enter the bloodstream, causing an array of mental and physical malfunctions. Following a gluten-free, casein-free diet allows the gut to heal. This, in turn, also allows essential nutrients to be absorbed properly, in order to feed the body and fuel the brain.

Another reason the gluten-free, casein-free diet can be beneficial for these children is because wheat and cow’s milk dairy contain what are called gliadinomorphine and casomorphine, which act like opiates in the human brain and can lead to strange behaviors, repetition, detachedness, sleep disturbances, tantrums, depression, and addictions, among others. Determining if a food could be the root cause of such behaviors would require an elimination diet for several weeks.

Autism: Made In The U.S.A is available to view for free on YouTube, in eleven installments. It’s worth a watch and has the potential to make anyone question their paradigm; that is, the way they view health, the human body, and the way that for-profit companies play a role in the two (whether we want to believe it or not).
