Hey there! I have a super important message for you about inflammation.
We all know inflammation is bad. Advertisements for medicines on the TV talk about it all the time, blaming it for everything from heart disease to arthritis.
Inflammation is bad. It is so bad that we include decreasing inflammation as a part of treating every condition in our Gluten Free Works Treatment Guide.
But, what is inflammation and how do we stop it?
Inflammation is a defensive response by the immune system. Inflammation can be caused by injury, response to foreign invaders in the body, like bacteria or gluten, or it can also be caused by nutrient deficiencies that cause cells not to form or function properly.
When triggered, the immune system attacks, resulting in swelling, fluid retention and cellular damage. That is inflammation.
What does inflammation look like? Systemic inflammation looks like bloating and puffiness, especially in the face and eyelids, fingers and/or legs. It causes pain in joints and nerves and muscles. Acute inflammation will be located in one area, like the intestines in celiac disease or swollen gums from vitamin C deficiency. The location will swell and become red and painful.
Inflammation is blamed as the underlying cause for many health problems. This is FALSE.
Inflammation is a factor in disease, and may exacerbate problems, but it is not the underlying cause. That said, until the underlying cause can be found and corrected, inflammation must be decreased.
Think of the situation where a thorn is stuck in a wound. The thorn is the problem, not the swelling around it. The swelling (inflammation) is the response to the thorn. The swelling can make things worse and until the thorn is removed, the swelling will never stop.
Decreasing inflammation is so important that how to reduce it is listed under every single symptom on the Gluten Free Works Health Guide. Each health condition lists 6 Steps to correct the problem. Reducing Inflammation is Step 2 and includes 1) Foods to eat, 2) Foods to avoid, 3) Probiotics, 4) Prebiotics, 5) Herbs and Spices. Other information necessary for decreasing inflammation may be included depending on the health condition in question.
Look up your symptoms in the Health Guide “Symptom Search” located on the main website navigation bar. Then, follow the steps to reduce inflammation listed under each symptom. The other steps will tell you how to correct the symptom, or how to remove the “thorn.” It really is that easy and the results are life changing.

Knowing the signs of inflammation will help one better understand how to alleviate it. Great insight for those that may be struggling with this.
