3.4 million people in the United States have epilepsy and about 65 million worldwide. Epilepsy is a serious disorder that affects the brain. People with epilepsy suffer from seizures. The seizures can range from small and barely noticeable to so severe that that the person loses consciousness and the body spasms.
While the exact mechanism is as yet unclear, there is definitely a link between gluten and epilepsy in a certain percentage of people. This video explains the link, the effects and how the seizures respond to the the gluten-free diet.
We have gathered and presented medical research in the epilepsy section Gluten Free Works Treatment Guide that links gluten to epilepsy in 1 in 20 individuals. Considering a gluten-free diet helps a quarter of these people, screening for gluten sensitivity and celiac disease is appropriate in anyone with epilepsy. You must request the tests, since doctors do not know this link or look for it when an individual presents with epilepsy. Please refer your doctor to the Treatment Guide for more information. All the medical studies and case reports are cited there, as well as treatment recommendations. The Health Guide also includes a section on Occipital Lobe Epilepsy with Cerebral Calcifications.
I am one with epilepsy, complex partial seizures, celiac disease, type one diabetes, and recently started reacting to lactose. There is a connection between each one. It was diagnoses of T1D at 14, celiac at 15, and epilepsy at 16.5 yrs old. The celiac was found by accident because a diabetes nurse pit it in the wrong test, a blessing from God. And that was back in 2001, not much was known or available.
I have Severe Celiac and Lactose Intolerance I get Epileptic Seizures with Celiac and Lactose Intolerance
While there is certainly a link between gluten and Celiac Disease, few understand how epilepsy is linked to the conversation and why it’s so important to be mindful of one’s health in general.
