General Mills has added another flavor of gluten-free Chex to its lineup: Apple Cinnamon.  This addition makes six flavors (Honey Nut, Rice, Corn, Chocolate, and Cinnamon) that are gluten free and on supermarket shelves around the country.

Apple Cinnamon Chex Has:

  • No artificial colors or flavors
  • Sprinkled with real apple and cinnamon
  • 8 grams of sugar per serving
  • 9 grams of whole grain (at least 48 grams recommended daily)

When the first batch of gluten-free Chex cereals were released I had more luck finding them at Walmart than at the grocery store, but if you just can’t wait to find them locally you can order them at Amazon.com and at GlutenFreely.com online where they are on sale now.  Read More »

Gluten-Free Product Review: KURDelights by KURSuperfoods

Gluten Free Works Jennifer Harris

KUR SuperfoodsSince I am always on the lookout for a sweet snack that is free of gluten, dairy, and soy, I was happy to receive samples of KURDelights.  So many gluten-free bars/snacks contain soy protein and/or dairy, or they are very high in sugar and carbs and low in protein and fiber, which is not the case with KURDelights.

These bite-sized snacks contain just enough sweetness to satisfy my sweet tooth and they come in three flavors: Brownie, Coconut Cream, and Dark Chocolate Mint.  My favorite flavor is the coconut cream followed by brownie and then dark chocolate mint.  These healthy snacks are: Read More »

After hearing about the unsafe gluten-free pizzas at Domino’s, it was a breath of fresh air to hear that Chuck E. Cheese’s is test marketing gluten-free pizza and cupcakes at select Minnesota locations under the guidance of the Gluten Intolerance Group (GIG).

Both of their gluten-free options will arrive in pre-sealed, single-serve packaging and they will remain that way through preparation to be opened and served at the table by the adult in charge. This means both the pizza and the cupcake will arrive at the table free from cross contamination and ready to be enjoyed by the birthday child!

How can they do this with a pizza you ask?  The cheese pizza is made by Read More »

Do You Make Your Own Gluten-free Bread?

Homemade Gluten Free Bread
I have often wondered what percentage of people following the gluten-free diet actually make their own bread.  I tend to use mixes to make sweet breads, but I usually buy my gluten-free bread off the shelf, or from my favorite local gluten-free bakery Pure Knead.

Most of us know that gluten-free bread has come a long way in the last five years, so there are a number of great options to be purchased at local health foods stores that don’t contain artificial ingredients and have the taste and texture of wheat-based bread.

Still, there seems to be a rising percentage of people who prefer to make their own gluten-free bread. Some of my favorite gluten-free bread mixes to use are: Read More »

Unique Gluten-free Finds at Expo West 2012 – Part 3 of 4

Gluten Free Works Jennifer Harris

Continuing with part three of my favorite gluten-free products from Expo West, here are my picks for: cheese, granola and snacks.  There were many contenders in these categories, so I limited my list to the top contenders.  All of these products should start arriving on store shelves over the next couple of months.

Cheese

  • Daiya Foods – launched their wedges in three flavors: jack, cheddar, and jalapeno garlic havarti.  If you are looking for a plant-based ‘cheese’ that is free of dairy and soy then you have come to the right place.  Daiya already makes shredded cheese that is great to bake with, but isn’t meant for eating out of the package.  These wedge cheeses can be sliced and eaten right out of the package. They are much softer than I had anticipated, so I could easily press it down with my finger.  The cheese is creamy and would be great to spread on crackers, or to use as spread on sandwiches.  I really liked the spicy kick of the Havarti, the Cheddar had great flavor, and the Jack was just OK. Unique Gluten-free Finds at Expo West 2012 – Part 2 of 4

Gluten-free products dominated the new products category at Expo West this year, which saw record attendance in both the number of attendees and exhibiting vendors.  Here is my second installment of my favorite picks for gluten-free candy, cookies, and mixes.

Candy

  • Justin’s – has turned their line of squeezable peanut/nut butters into three candy bars: Milk Chocolate Peanut, Dark Chocolate Peanut, and Milk Chocolate Almond.  They taste like a healthy version of a snickers made with quality ingredients and packed with protein. Read More »

Unique Gluten-free Finds at Expo West 2012 – Part 1 of 4

Gluten-free Finds at Expo West 2012

This was my second time attending Expo West and this time I attended as a member of the press for Examiner.com.  I have been writing for Examiner.com as their Atlanta Gluten-free Examiner since 2009, so it was very exciting to receive press credentials and attend.

Attending as a member of the press means I had access to the press room to review materials, I was able to talk with the public relations specialist for companies and I got to chat with other journalist to see what they thought of the show.  Overwhelmingly they all commented on the increased number of gluten-free products at this year’s event.

Last year I was completely overwhelmed by the experience, so this year I was more prepared.  I spent the majority of my time in Room E, which housed those vendors with new products.  The room was full of gluten-free products and after four hours of combing the room I still had not seen all of them.  The best part was a large percentage of the new gluten-free products had Read More »

I just learned of a new study being conducted by The National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA) and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston, Massachusetts to better understand the attitudes and beliefs of family members of persons with celiac disease.

More information on the study and how you can get involved follows:

Finding Gluten-Free Cuisine Is a Breeze in Las Vegas

Grilled Lamb Porterhouse Chops w/Preserved Serrano Chile Vinegar Sauce and Roasted Garlic

For the last two years my husband and I have enjoyed going to Las Vegas for a getaway. We like it there because there is gambling, shopping, shows and of course wonderful food. Those food options include an abundance of gluten-free cuisine.

While there in December 2011 we enjoyed two gourmet dinners with a plethora of gluten-free menu options.  One of the dinners was at Mesa Grill in Caesars Palace and the other was at NobHill Tavern in MGM Grand.  We also enjoyed a special breakfast complete with gluten-free Pamela’s Products pancakes ordered off of their Gluten Sensitive menu at The Cracked Egg.

Mesa Grill was up first and while the decor was a little on the cheesy side the food was excellent. When we made our reservations I was sure to stipulate that I would be eating Read More »
