Our recent trip to Paris, France was filled with lots of sightseeing, shopping and taking in the local cuisine. Traveling gluten free in Europe does require some research, so I wanted to share my gluten-free shopping experience.
It is important to know how to say gluten free in the appropriate language, so in French you ask for products that are ‘sans gluten’. I found it difficult to come by people who spoke English when we were in Paris, so make sure Read More »

Better4U Foods Roasted Vegetable Pizza

Every Wednesday I look forward to watching the weekly video of new product reviews from Phil Lempert, The Supermarket Guru, because usually at least one gluten-free product is included in each episode. After scoring a hit (85 and above) of an 88, this Examiner was very interested to sample the gluten-free pizza from Better 4U Foods.
Unfortunately I cannot tolerate dairy or soy and it is quite difficult to find a dairy/soy-free, gluten-free pizza. In steps Better 4U Foods with their dairy/soy free roasted vegetable pizza made with Daiya cheese and a multi-grain crust made with Read More »

A plethora of gluten-free foods can be found when traveling in Europe. Photo Credit: Jen Harris
It has been a month since I returned from our European vacation. We visited many cities in Germany, Brussels, Belgium, Paris, France, and Prague, Czech Republic. By far the best place to shop for gluten-free groceries was Berlin, Germany.
It is important to know how to say gluten free in the appropriate language just in case you find someone who doesn’t speak English. In German, gluten free is pronounced glutenfrei (gluten fry). I have to say that English must be the second language in Germany because there was rarely Read More »

Mrs. May’s Cashew Crunch is filling and slightly sweet. Photo: Mrs. May’s
When we went on our trip to Europe I wanted to be realistic about what gluten-free foods I brought with me. I didn’t want to be in a situation where I had little to no food options, but I also didn’t want to bring my entire pantry with me, so I managed the situation by packing my favorite ‘staple’ items that did not need refrigeration.
I don’t know about you, but I tend to eat totally differently when I am traveling than I do at home, so I pack items I know will keep me full between meals and in place of meals. I also pack something sweet because that is usually the Read More »

This Examiner was fortunate enough to receive a box of Dr. Schar’s newest product, Honeygrams, to try and review. One of my favorite snacks as a kid was graham crackers topped with peanut butter and I am happy to report that these graham crackers taste better than the wheat-based version of my youth.
Dr. Schar has created a graham cracker that has the perfect amount of Read More »

I just received an email from the Celiac Disease Research Center at Columbia University regarding a study showing a possible association between a blood pressure medication and villous atrophy. The blood pressure medication is called olmesartan and it is also known as Benicar, Benicar HCT, Azor, and Olmetec.
According to this article, the three-year study was conducted by the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and it included 22 patients who had symptoms of celiac disease, but antibody blood tests did not support that diagnosis. During this study patients improved with discontinuation of the drug, while a gluten-free diet had had no impact on their Read More »
