Gluten Free Doughnut Smack Down – Kinnikinnick vs. Glutino

Most people who read my articles know this Examiner is a big fan of the gluten-free product line currently available from Kinnikinnick Foods. Kinnikinnick was the first company this Examiner found that made a retail line of gluten-free doughnuts, but this year Glutino got into the gluten-free doughnut making game and we felt it necessary to compare the brands and choose a winner.

Growing up in Illinois we used to frequent Dunkin’ Donuts on Saturday morning to indulge on their cake doughnuts, which are much heavier than say Krispy Kreme. To me, both the flavor and the texture of Kinnikinnick’s doughnuts brought me back to my Dunkin’ Donuts eating days. They have been my favorite gluten-free doughnut manufacturer for more than a decade because they are dairy/casein free, they are manufactured in a nut-free facility and because they are just yummy!

My favorite Kinnikinnick doughnut was their chocolate iced doughnut, which they are not making at this time. It literally tastes like a piece of chocolate cake covered in icing that has a much lighter texture than their other doughnuts. This year they came out with a seasonal pumpkin spice doughnut that reminded me of that same light texture. This Examiner hopes that Kinnikinnick brings back their chocolate iced doughnut and continues with their seasonal line of doughnuts (add more glaze please!).

Now on to Glutino who has created two gluten-free doughnuts: Glazed Original and Glazed Chocolate. Unlike Kinnikinnick, both of these doughnuts contain dairy, which a number of people on the gluten-free diet cannot tolerate. To me these doughnuts were a miss in both flavor and texture. First off we couldn’t even tell they had glaze on them because we couldn’t see it or taste it. Secondly, the chocolate tasted more like a piece of cake than a doughnut and had a weirdly springy texture. The glaze version was more of the same and reminded us of another gluten-free product line’s doughnut holes that we also do not care for.

The winner and still champion is Kinnikinnick Foods..hands down. The price of both gluten-free doughnuts is comparable and both can be found locally at Return to Eden and some Krogers. Both doughnuts are easily prepared by using the defrost cycle on your microwave, or by letting them thaw on the counter.

    The chocolate glazed Kinnikinnick almost made me cry it was so good! What a relief to have something that makes you feel “normal” again. I just tried the vanilla glazed and it was good, not as sweet. These are definitely a staple in my freezer for a treat.

    Wow. I thought they were atrocious (Kinnikinnick). Cloying sweet and weird texture. I found a really great doughnut recipe and make my own. So much better. :)

    You should also try Katz brand. Their products are awesome and often don’t have dairy.
