Gluten-Free Stuffed Turkey Burgers

While watching The Chew on ABC one day, Mario Batali’s sons gave me a fantastic idea. They had made “Pocket Burgers,” which is a hamburger with the toppings inside of the burger.

WHY HAVEN’T I EVER THOUGHT TO DO THIS BEFORE?

I made a version of their recipe that is somewhat healthier using ground turkey instead of beef, plus this nifty recipe for Tomato Chutney.

Kale and Beef in Chestnut Sauce

Wanna hear something funny? When I first started my blog, I intended it to be an even mix of meals, breads, soups, desserts, etc. that mirrored how we eat. When I re-did my recipe index, I realized that notion bit the dust a few years back, and surprise, surprise, it seems like my blog is brought to you by the letter C and the word chocolate. Not that I don’t love chocolate, but I’d kinda like to balance things a little more.  Just cause.

Then again, as I look at my very un-photogenic, super-yumtastic stew, maybe part of my decision is because dessert photographs better? Read More »

Experience Cuisine From Around the World in the Comfort of Your Kitchen!

When I went gluten-free one of the many blessings in my change in diet was my openness to try new foods. Specifically, I was interested in trying other ethnic foods. As I was trying to get over my “food fear” I wanted to embrace and enjoy the flavors foods had to offer.

Betsy’s Bakery to Host Gluten-Free Candlelight Dinner On Valentine’s Day

Let me preface this post by noting that Valentine’s day is not a holiday I, personally, subscribe to. The cards, the flowers, the mush, the grand gestures, and all the things that some expect of this day…none of that is really my jam. So, last year, after I requested no frills or fancy dinners or grand gestures, my boyfriend, Mike, presented me with a terracotta pot with a yellow lily and some dirt in it. (Read: don’t scoff yet…) Upon further inspection, it turned out that the “dirt” was finely crushed chocolate cookie bits covering a blue Solo cup filled with his gluten-free version of cookies and cream ice cream (my absolute favorite) that he had mixed and made himself. This gesture seemed small to some in my life, but to me, the girl who hadn’t had cookies and cream ice cream in almost two years, it was the grandest gesture of them all.

That one grand gesture, when someone went out of his way to make sure that I could eat what I loved and not get sick is why the the candlelight dinner at Betsy’s Bakery in Camp Hill, PA is so important. This little bakery is hosting a reservation-only, gluten-free candlelight dinner on Valentine’s day this year. Taking your gluten-free sweetie to this dinner may be the gesture they’ve been looking for if you haven’t quite mastered the gluten-free vibe in the kitchen, or if you’re tired of going out to eat at the same “safe” restaurants all the time. Gluten-Free Tater Tot Casserole

Tater Tot Casserole. With a name like that, how can you go wrong!?!

While growing up, one household favorite was the tater tot casserole my mom would make. She loved it because, as a busy single-mom,  she could make it ahead of time and then pop it in the oven when the time came. Us kids loved it for the most obvious reason: It had tater tots in it!

We have easily modified this casserole to be gluten-free, and can once again enjoy the comfort it brings on a cold, wintry day. Read More »

Review: Exotic Gluten Free Simmer Sauces from Saffron Road

I enjoy preparing from scratch home cooked meals for my family, but on especially busy weeknights I sometimes use a few prepared foods to help speed up the process.  Prepared foods typically contain less than healthy ingredients, so I opt for all natural products such as the new gluten free Simmer Sauces from Saffron Road.Saffron Road’s gluten free Simmer Sauces come in four flavors, each a unique taste of world cuisine.  My family had the pleasure of sampling the following simmer sauce flavors, which I am happy to report are also dairy free: Read More »

Porta Via Italian Kitchen: Best Gluten-Free Pizza??

Gluten Free Works Author Heather

I can’t believe that it has taken me this long to try Porta Via Italian Kitchen since hearing for the past year that they have amazing gluten-free pizza. But I’ve been leaning towards a high raw/vegan diet, so I’ve been less attracted to restaurants claiming to have the next best gf crust.  Yawn…

Having guests in town gave us the perfect opportunity to try Porta Via Italian Kitchen. I was astounded that they not only had gluten-free pizza, but gluten-free pasta as well.
