Adipose (Fat) Disorders

This category comprises disorders of adipose tissue involving abnormal storage of fat, metabolic dysfunction, and inflammation of fat cells themselves.

Adipose is body fat composed of fat cells (adipocytes) loosely held in connective tissue. Adipose stores energy in the form of fatty acids as the largest source of fuel for later use and is closely involved with metabolism. Importantly, adipose tissue has an endocrine hormone function, secreting leptin and other proteins involved in metabolism of energy. Leptin helps regulate metabolism by stimulating energy expenditure, reducing appetite, and restoring normal blood glucose levels.
