I had the wonderful opportunity to try Shane’s Rib Shack the other night. I had known that Shane’s had a gluten-free menu, but had never dined there before.
There are a great number of choices for those who have to follow a gluten-free diet, including pork, ribs and chicken. The BBQ sauce is gluten-free. Shane’s also has a number of sides that are gluten-free, including cole slaw, baked beans, corn, and salad. For healthier options, there are salads on the menu with brisket, grilled chicken or pork.

With 2010 just around the corner, many people are working on their lists of New Years Resolutions. It comes as no surprise that, with the economy the way it is, that one of the New Years Resolutions topping the list this year is trying to reduce spending. For gluten free households, this can be a challenging thing to do.
A single loaf of gluten free bread can cost between six and ten dollars. Add to that the expense of flours, pasta and the ever present snack foods and the grocery budget can get out of control very quickly.
If your grocery budget could use a little trimming this new year, these suggestions may help.

Often times, when baking gluten free items, a small substitution is needed. However, if you don’t bake a lot, some recipes can be a bit complex. It’s best to follow a good recipe and make sure to make it once before you decide to make it for a big party.
Chocolate genoise cake can be used to make any type of jelly roll cake but it’s especially popular around the holidays to make a yule log. Creating a gluten free version requires only a few changes. Always make sure the other ingredients are gluten free like the cocoa. For the best flavor, use a local cocoa powder like Ghirardelli. It gives the cake a great flavor.

If this product had existed when I was a kid, I would probably be a healthier person today! For all you parents out there who have kids that love the “usual” gelatin snack product, but cringe when you think about the ingredients, fear no more.
You now have vegan Cool Cups. Cool Cups come in several flavors. At the Whole Foods near my house, I bought the orange, black cherry and peach mango.

Most U.S. hotels do not offer gluten-free bread products for breakfast (or other meals). They might have bacon, eggs and potatoes but they are not likely to offer gluten-free muffins or waffles. It’s annoying to get a “free” breakfast that offers you only a piece of fruit, or if you’re lucky, a hard boiled egg.
Now the search for the perfect shelf stable breakfast treat is over. Sorrella Bakery Biscotinnes are handmade gluten-free biscotti type cookies. They are crunchy but not as dense as regular biscotti. There are several flavors but we only tried the “Cinnamon Swirl” which is phenomenal.

A hidden source of gluten is often found in shampoos, conditioners and lotions. Who would have known?
Many beauty products contain some source of wheat. Those with food allergies should check with the company to make sure their product is gluten-free. One of my favorite gluten-free beauty products is by Desert Essence. Their fragrance free collection is great for those who have sensitive skin. The lotion is delightfully moisturizing, the shampoo and body wash lather extremely well and the conditioner detangles the hair nicely. Desert Essence also makes several other shampoos and conditioners with an assortment of wonderful fragrances.
