What Is Magnesium?

[dropcap]M[/dropcap]agnesium is an essential mineral predominantly found in the body within cells, where it is vital for their functions.

Here is a summary of what magnesium does in our body:

  1. Co-factor for over 300 enzymes involved in the metabolism of food components and synthesis of many compounds.
  2. Required for nerve transmission.
  3. Required for muscle activity (acts to relax muscles in opposition to calcium which acts to contract).
  4. Acts to maintain heart rhythm.
  5. Required for membrane transport and interactions.
  6. Required for glucose metabolism and energy production within cells.
  7. Component of bone mineralization and tooth formation.
  8. Plays a key role in calcium and phosphorus metabolism and management by parathyroid hormone.
  9. Maintains the structural and functional integrity of vital eye tissues such as lens.1

Only 1% of magnesium is found in blood, but the body must keep blood levels of magnesium constant.

What Is Vitamin E?

[dropcap]V[/dropcap]itamin E is not a single vitamin but naturally occurs as a fat-soluble vitamin family that consists of at least 8 distinct molecules.

These molecules include 4 tocopherols (alpha, beta, gamma, and delta) and 4 tocotrienols (alpha, beta, gamma, and delta).

Generally, tocotrienols are more active against chronic disease while tocopherols are more protective of the nervous system.

Vitamin E (for short) is a powerful antioxidant that protects cell membranes and other fat-soluble compounds from oxidative damage by free radicals (molecules that damage cells).

Q: How does vitamin E protect cells from oxidative damage by free radicals?

A: As an example, the oxidative damage to low density cholesterol (LDL – bad type) appears to lead to the deposition of cholesterol in the arterial wall (plaque formation) leading to atherosclerotic disease, commonly called hardening of the arteries.

Regarding inflammation, mast cells are activated by oxidized LDL which results in increased expression of inflammatory cytokines. This finding suggests that vitamin E antioxidant activity in reducing oxidation of LDL lipoprotein may also reduce mast cell activation. Mast cells reside near small blood vessels and, when activated, release potent mediators involved in allergy and inflammation.1

In neutralizing free radicals, vitamin E itself is oxidized (changed) to a free radical. Importantly, conversion of vitamin E back to the original form occurs by reaction with vitamin C. These two vital anti-oxidants go hand in hand.

Vitamin E is essential for normal cerebellar brain function (lower brain), peripheral nerve health and healthy skin.

A: The metabolic needs of the body for magnesium are numerous which gives rise to very many distressing symptoms when this mineral is deficient.

A major function of magnesium is to stabilize the structure of an enzyme called adenosine triphosphate (ATP) within cells for the production of energy. In the brain, magnesium plays important roles in all the major metabolisms such as oxidation-reduction and regulation of ions (charged minerals).1

What Is Multiple Sclerosis?

[dropcap]M[/dropcap]ultiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system characterized by patchy inflammation of the myelin sheath surrounding nerve cells that produces multiple and varied neurologic symptoms and signs due to demyelination.

Q: What does demyelination mean.

A: Demyelination means there is damage to the myelin sheath which is a fatty substance that surrounds and protects nerve cells much like a the covering of a lamp cord keeps the electricity flowing within it from the plug to the light bulb. This damage impairs transmission of nerve impulses between the brain and body.

In the process of demyelination, T-lymphocyte cells that are activated and potentially autoimmune cross the blood-brain barrier and produce inflammatory plaques and axonal tissue loss in the brain, spinal cord or optic (vision) nerves. The end result is the accumulation of gliosis (scarring) and demyelination of areas in the central nervous system.1

The course of multiple sclerosis is unpredictable and slowly progressive, usually with  exacerbations (worse symptoms) and remissions (relief of symptoms).

Multiple sclerosis affects about 1 ‰ of the population worldwide.

What Is Common Variable Immunodeficiency?

[dropcap]C[/dropcap]ommon variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a primary antibody deficiency disease characterized by the onset of recurrent bacterial infections resulting from markedly decreased immunoglobulin antibody production and antibody levels.

Q: What causes common variable immunodeficiency?

A: Common variable immunodeficiency is caused by a defect in any critical stage of B cell development and is characterized by impaired production of normal amounts of antigen-specific antibodies. This is a set up for infection, autoimmune disease, and cancer.

One important histologic feature is the absence or paucity of plasma cells in the biopsy that occurs in common variable immunodeficiency. The diagnosis is initially made by measuring quantitative immunoglobulins and then specific immune testing on these cell subsets in the circulation by flow cytometry.1

Early diagnosis and treatment with IgG therapy (immunoglobulin G) can decrease illness and mortality.2 

Pulmonary damage is the most frequent complication and may result from recurrent infections and/or immune dysregulation. Other complications due to the underlying immune dysregulation include lymphoproliferative disease (granulomatous disease, lymphadenopathy and hepatosplenomegaly), autoimmune disease, gastrointestinal disease such as chronic inflammation and an increased risk of cancer.3

It is important to recognize that common variable immunodeficiency can occur at any age, but an early onset may be associated with an increased risk of gastric cancers and lymphoma, particularly of the intestine.3

Patients with common variable immunodeficiency should be managed by an immunologist with experience in primary immunodeficiency states, given the complications of these patients.4

What Is Brain Atrophy?

[dropcap]B[/dropcap]rain atrophy is a degenerative condition of the brain characterized by loss of brain tissue, causing the brain to shrink.

Q: How does loss of brain tissue affect the body?

A: Loss of brain tissue will result in dysfunction depending on the area of the brain that is affected.

For example, loss of brain tissue in the lower brain, or cerebellum, will impair muscle coordination in activities such as walking, while loss of brain tissue in the frontal lobes of the cerebrum will impair cognition such as thinking, judgment, analysis, mathematical ability, and memory.
