What Is Hypocupremia?

Hypocupremia, or low plasma copper, means the level of copper is too low to meet metabolic needs of the body for copper and is characterized by these many features:

  1. Impaired energy production causing weakness.
  2. Impaired ability as part of an enzyme to oxidize vitamin C which is required to breakdown histamine.
  3. Faulty blood cell formation and instability of blood cell membranes causing anemia, shortened life span of neutrophils causing susceptibility to infection, faulty platelet formation causing impaired blood clotting.
  4. Faulty elastin formation causing weak blood vessels.
  5. Poor collagen and connective tissue strength causing joint and tendon problems and weak bones causing deformities, faulty bone mineralization causing fragile bones.
  6. Loss of proprioception causing ataxia.
  7. Loss of pigmentation of hair and skin.
  8. Impaired thyroid function.
  9. Impaired adrenalin production.

Untreated, copper deficiency can advance to brain degeneration. Failure to make normal blood cells can result in death.

Hypocalcemia, or low plasma calcium, means the level of calcium in blood is too low to meet metabolic needs of the body for calcium.

Low blood calcium is characterized by bone and tooth demineralization (loss of calcium causing weak teeth and fragile bones), and these impaired functions: nerve conduction, muscle contraction, blood clotting, blood pressure regulation, glycogen to glucose conversion, many hormone actions, many enzyme activities, and acetylcholine production.

Q: Where is calcium found in the body?

A: Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body, with 99% residing in bones and teeth where it constitutes 40% of skeletal bone weight along with 45% phosphorus. As a component of bone (hard tissue), calcium fulfills a structural role to maintain body size and act as attachments for musculoskeletal tissues. The remaining 1% of calcium is present in blood and soft tissues.

Calcium levels in the blood are maintained within very strict limits by dietary intake, hormonal regulation by the parathyroid gland and a rapidly exchangeable pool in bone tissue.

Anorexia or loss of appetite is a reduced desire to eat which can cause unintentional weight loss.

Anorexia is a feature of many disorders caused by malutrition such as celiac disease and aging or gastrointestinal problems such as chronic gastroenteritis, and dysgeusia (loss of taste).

Q: Are there other conditions that cause anorexia?

A: Other underlying problem include medication side effects, infection, chronic pain, depression, grief, dehydration, hormonal dysfunction such as thyroid disease, primary hyperparathyroidism, or Addison’s disease, autoimmune mechanisms such as sarcoidosis,  and cancer growth.

What Is Small Intestinal Edema?

Small intestinal edema is characterized by fluid accumulation within the intestinal mucosa so that the intestinal wall appears thick and swollen.

Intestinal edema hampers peristalsis that can result in pain and gas build-up. Peristalsis is the normal rhythmic muscular wave-like action that moves residue along the gastrointestinal tract.

Q: What part of the small intestinal lining is swollen?

A: Any part of the small intestine may be affected. Some causes of edema include allergic reactions, enteropathies such as celiac disease, cow milk enteropthy, yeast infection, parasite infection, inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s disease, and certain medications.

For example, the anti-hypertensive drugs known as Angiotension Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitors can cause intestinal angioedema and therefore the patient may present with gastrointestinal complaints.1

What Is Chronic Ulcerative Jejunitis?

Chronic ulcerative jejunitis is a disease of the small intestine that is characterized by inflammation and ulceration of the mucosal lining of the jejunum.

Q: How do inflammation and ulceration affect digestion in the jejunum?

A: Inflammation swells the lining and this impairs absorption of nutrients. Together with ulceration the inflamed and swollen jejunum hampers peristalsis, or the rhythmic movement of food by intestinal muscles.

Impaired peristalsis promotes constipation and/or diarrhea. Bacterial overgrowth may develop. Ulcerations may bleed which could cause the development of iron deficiency anemia.

Maltose Intolerance

What Is Maltose Intolerance?

Maltose intolerance is an enzymopathy (enzyme failure) characterized by inability of the gut to properly break down maltose sugar molecules in food due to low maltase enzyme activity of the small intestinal lining.

Q: What is maltose and maltase?

A: Maltose is a double sugar made up of two molecules of glucose and is derived from starch. Maltase is the enzyme required to digest or release glucose from maltose. Maltase is produced in the microscopic brush border (microvilli) at the base of villi.

Here’s what happens when maltose is not digested:

  • Undigested maltose cannot be absorbed into the body but remains inside the small intestine where it acts osmotically to draw an unnatural amount of water from the body into the intestine which produces diarrhea.
  • Additionally, normal gut bacteria ferment the abnormal abundance of unabsorbed maltose, thereby generating an abundance of short-chain fatty acids and hydrogen gas which result in bloating and pain.1
  • Positive response to a breath hydrogen test (BHT), involving 1 – 3 hours of time post ingestion of maltose test dose, signifies malabsorption in the small intestine and fermentation in the colon. If BHT is positive before 60 minutes, the result implies bacteria is abnormally present in the small intestine, causing fermentation there.

Bovine beta casein enteropathy is characterized by raised serum IgA antibodies to bovine beta casein found by blood testing and damage to mucosa of the jejunum found by biopsy.

The jejunum is the second section of the small intestine, between the duodenum and the ileum.

Mucosa damage is similar to damage caused by gluten.

Q: What is bovine beta casein?

A: Bovine beta casein is a protein found in cow’s milk.

An immune reaction to protein in milk is totally different from lactose intolerance. Lactose intolerance develops from deficiency of an intestinal enzyme called lactase which is required to digest lactose, the sugar in milk.

Ulceration And Stenosis, Postbulbar Duodenal

What Is Postbulbar Duodenal Ulceration/Stenosis?

Postbulbar duodenal ulceration is a chronic inflammatory disorder characterized by thickening of the intestinal lining with excoriation penetrating the muscularis mucosae (muscle layer of the intestine) associated with villous atrophy.

The ulcer is well-defined. Stenosis due to thickening of the area narrows the hollow inside of the duodenum which impairs passage of foodstuffs and may lead to obstruction.

Q: Is postbulbar duodenal ulceration painful?

A: Postbulbar duodenal ulceration may not cause symptoms but usually causes gnawing pain that is relieved by eating food. After eating there develops nausea and bloating.

Complications include obstruction, bleeding, and perforation of the duodenal lining. Ulcers do not usually become malignant.

What Is Volvulus?

Volvulus is twisting of a loop(s) of bowel onto itself which effectively closes it thus preventing digested matter from passing and causing engorgement of the closed loop with gas and fluid.

Q: How does the bowel get untwisted?

A: This condition usually necessitates surgical correction although some do return to their proper position.

The danger is that there may develop necrosis of the twisted loop(s) in which case, if left untreated, death will ensue.

Macrocytosis is a blood cell disorder characterized by altered blood cell formation that results in abnormally large erythrocytes (red blood cells) circulating in the bloodstream.

The mean corpuscular volume (MCV), which is a measure of the size of red blood cells in the bloodstream, is greater than 100 fL as shown in a complete blood count (CBC) laboratory analysis report.

Macrocytosis produces macrocytic anemias that are classified as megaloblastic or non-megaloblastic:

  1. Megaloblastic anemias result from disorders of DNA synthesis of red blood cell precursors (megaloblasts) in bone marrow due to B vitamin deficiency demonstrated by macro-ovalocytes and hypersegmented neutrophils.1
  2. Non-megaloblastic anemias are or those caused primarily by alcoholism, liver disease and hypothyroidism.2
