Gluten-Free Coconut Chocolate Chip Cookies

I look forward to the holiday season – visiting family, friends, the exchanging of gifts. And of course there’s the food. When you aren’t hosting your own thanksgiving, it can be stressful to make sure you aren’t getting any gluten in your diet.

I had to call my boyfriend’s aunt to make sure that the turkey was okay for me to eat, and ask about other side dishes being made. But when it comes to dessert, I don’t expect everyone to cater to me, so I will be bringing my own this year.  Normally I make a pie or cake or some sort.  This year, I’m making a simple but delicious favorite: chocolate chip cookies.

These cookies are good for those who are on a gluten free diet or even those following a paleo lifestyle. Most paleo peeps don’t eat grains or

I can’t believe that it is almost Thanksgiving! Where has this year gone to, or this month further more lol The fall is flying by, and I must say I’m loving it since I love the holidays. This is the first year that I will not be participating in the traditional Thanksgiving meal with family, as my Mother and I will be venturing to NYC for the week!

I did though, however, prepare for this and the Christmas holiday meals by recreating my absolute favorite side dish. I thought my holidays would be ruined when I went gluten free and thought I’d never eat my Mother’s stuffing again! I’m pretty crafty, so I of course I found a way to avoid a major meltdown at the dinner table.

I knew a meltdown was certain to happen if I had to watch others eat stuffing in front of me, dun dun dun….so I found a gluten free stuffing mix and recreated Mom’s recipe, and it tastes exactly the same!

Making Thanksgiving a Welcoming Meal for a Celiac Guest

Stephanie Diamond Gluten Free Works

gluten free thanksgiving partyThanksgiving can be the most depressing holiday for a celiac. It’s a whole day that centers around food. And no one wants to feel left out of the festivities. Part of being a celiac isn’t just the food, it’s the psychology of standing out in a crowd. I’ve found that I hate being pegged with the “special meal.” I want to fit in and eat the same food as everyone else. Thus, the most comforting thing for me is being invited to the home of someone who is aware of the simple steps that can be taken to make a gluten-free Thanksgiving that’s delicious for everyone.

It’s not necessarily about making gluten-free alternatives of “regular” food. It’s about finding regular food that happens to be gluten-free. You don’t need to spend a fortune at a specialty grocery store; most of

Gluten-Free Mango Cashew Cornbread Stuffing

We discovered during the past year that my 4-year-old son Ronin and my 21-month-old daughter Ellie are both gluten and dairy intolerant. My husband John is gluten-free too. The good news is that changing Ronin’s diet has helped his anxiety-related sleep issues decrease immensely. He used to have night terrors every night, but now only has them on the rare occasions we miss cutting out the gluten.

Since John has been gluten free for a while, I came up with this stuffing recipe a few years ago for Thanksgiving. And its always been a huge hit. This year I’ve modified it to also remove the dairy for the kiddos.

It. is. SO. Yum. If I do say so myself!

Healthful Pursuit - Leanne Vogel

I loved the idea of gifting my homemade cake stands to friends and families for the holidays. (Thanks everyone!)

Thing is – you can’t really give a cake stand to someone without having treats on it, especially if they know that you love to bake.

So I tried to figure out what seasonal recipe I could make for the stands that I could prepare ahead of time, freeze, would appeal to everyone I know (gluten-free, vegan, egg allergies, potato allergies etc), and will stay on the stand with little concern of things breaking.

Tall order, right?

Gluten Free Recipe: Roasted Tomatoes Over Polenta and Mascarpone Recipe

polenta and tomatoes mascarponeWhen Sarah Henkin and I were trying to come up with a menu item for samples at the Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market FoodWise booth, we decided to make delicious, late summer tomatoes the centerpiece. We needed to keep the dish simple since there were some other events happening that day. Roasted tomatoes on top of something seemed like a good option to me.

Since we eat gluten-free, I tend to not think about using bread with tomatoes (although the thought does leave me with pangs of longing for Acme). My standard fallback is usually polenta. I made a similar dish last year with roasted veggies and gorgonzola (see that post here) so this needed to be different.

Video AGAINST The Coeliac Society of Australia’s Proposed PPM Change

anti ppm changes australia new zealandIssues of Concern with the undermining of Coeliac Disease care in Australia and New Zealand, the current Trade Practices Act stipulates that only products with no detectable levels of gluten are permitted to be labelled gluten free.

It has recently come to my attention that the Coeliac Society of Australia has not that long ago asked the ACCC to raise the allowable detection limit of gluten laws for a food to be labelled gluten free in Australia. They plan to change it from ‘no detectable gluten’ (currently <3ppm (parts per million) of gluten) to 20 ppm gluten. This will allow foods with small traces of gluten to be labelled ‘gluten free’ and meet world labelling definitions as up until this time Australia and New Zealand are of few countries with such strict gluten free labelling laws. In turn, this supposed to make our diets less

I’m not sure if I’ve ever talked about my parents’ obsession with moving change.

I lived in a total of 12 houses in the first 17 years of my life.

Now, you may not think that’s a lot, but when you factor in that 6 of those 12 were temporary houses while our next house was being complete, that’s a heck of a lot of packing and unpacking in a short amount of time.

Sometimes these temporary houses would have a full kitchen, sometimes they wouldn’t. Sometimes they had a bedroom, sometimes they did not.

To make the transition as easy as possible, my Mom would make hundreds of casseroles. From manicotti, cannelloni, lasagna, to

Agar agar is gluten-free, vegan and works as a thickener in recipes.

Gelatin and agar agar powder can be used interchangably in gluten-free recipes, but what are the differences in these gluten-free ingredients and why are they used in some gluten-free recipes?

Most cooks are familiar with gelatin- the stuff that makes Jello gel. You can find it in virtually every market, usually as Knox brand gelatin.

Gelatin is sometimes used in gluten-free recipes to bind and thicken
