[dropcap]B[/dropcap]rittle nails are abnormalities of the nail plate that are characterized by poor nail structure affecting all fingernails and toenails seen as thin, dry nails that easily chip, split, and are difficult to maintain a clean edge. Usually longitudinal ridging occurs from the nail base to the tips.

Q: What is the nail plate?

A: The nail plate is the hard keratin cover protecting the finger tip and toe tip. The nail plate (non-living tissue) is produced by the nail matrix (living tissue) at the base of the nail plate under the lunula (moon), which is the site of brittle nail development.

Poor nail structure affecting all nails may be a feature of nutritional deficiency in poor diet or malabsorption such as occurs in celiac disease.

Some other causes are: idiopathic (unknown cause), the result of aging, the effects of certain drugs, or an association with systemic autoimmune disorders such as vitiligo, alopecia areata (with pitting), psoriasis (with pitting), and lichen planus. 

External (non-nutritional or disease) causes of dry, brittle nails, such as detergents and cleaners, would only affect fingernails but not toenails.

Note: It has been shown that working with your hands in water or soaking them through activities like swimming does not cause dry, brittle nails but will worsen them.

What Are Brittle Nails In Celiac Disease and/or Gluten Sensitivity?

  • Relationship between dry and brittle nails and celiac disease. Nails of both toes and fingers that are dry and brittle are a classic symptom of celiac disease resulting from malabsorption of multiple nutrients.
  • Relationship between dry and brittle nails and dehydration. Dehydration is common in celiac disease. Observation by electron microscope of the deep areas of nail plates of clipped normal nails shows intermingled spaces between cells (keratinocytes) and two thin, electron-dense layers in a narrow gap between these cells. In contrast, in brittle nails, marked widening of spaces between cells was frequently observed and electron-dense layers were either not seen or were disrupted. These results suggest that widening of the space between nail keratinocytes is correlated with brittle nails and that dehydration may result in such widening.1

How Prevalent Are Brittle Nails In Celiac Disease and/or Gluten Sensitivity?

Dry and brittle nails are common in untreated patients with celiac disease.

  • Dry and brittle nails are marked by nails that chip, crack, and break easily and are hard to clip evenly and maintain a smooth edge.
  • They may peel even if they are hard, but more likely, if they are soft.
  • Dry and fragile nails stain easily and hold dirt.

How Do Brittle Nails Develop In Celiac Disease and/or Gluten Sensitivity?

  • Dry and brittle nails result from disruption of the proximal matrix of the nail bed due to malabsorption in gluten sensitive enteropathy causing vitamin A, zinc, biotin and calcium deficiencies.
  • Nails that chip, peel, crack, or break easily result from protein, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acid deficiencies.

Do Brittle Nails Respond To Gluten-Free Diet?

Yes. Celiac disease-related nail abnormalities respond to a nutritious gluten free diet however, supplementation with deficient nutrients may be needed.

Adequate hydration must be maintained.

6 Steps To Improve Brittle Nails In Celiac Disease and/or Gluten Sensitivity:

  • [dropcap]1[/dropcap]Remove the Trigger. Maintain a Strict, Nutritious Gluten Free Diet:

[box type=”shadow” ]Treatment. This condition responds to the complete elimination of gluten, which is the required treatment that improves both nail and gut health.

  • Gut health is the foundation to restore ALL health. Restored health will enable you to maintain a strict gluten free diet, just as other life tasks will be easier.
  • A strict gluten free diet means removing 100% of wheat, barley, rye and oats from the diet.
  • Cutting out bread and other obvious sources of gluten is not good enough for recovery. Even 1/8th teaspoon of flour or bread crumb is enough to sustain the inflammation that is damaging your small intestine, causing increased permeability (leaky gut) and allowing undigested gluten to enter your body where it can damage structures and function, and instigate immune inflammatory responses.

Correct Your Individual Nutritional Needs.

  • Eat foods that can replenish missing nutrients. Find them under NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES.
  • Take nutritional supplements as needed. Find them under NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES.

Recovery. You should begin to feel better within a week and notice more energy as inflammation subsides and the  absorbing cells that make up the surface lining of your small intestine are better able to function.

Because gluten is inflammatory, eliminate OTHER inflammatory foods from your diet to reduce an additive effect to gluten. At the same time, try to eat foods that reduce inflammation (anti-inflammatory).

  • Damaging Foods. In susceptible persons, includes corn, dairy (cow), and soy. Lactose, the sugar in any animal milk disrupts intestinal permeability causing leaky gut.3
  • Allergenic Foods. Includes foods that trigger the immune sytem to produce IgE antibodies. Allergy testing is the usual way to discover these offending foods.
  • Shelf Stable Processed Foods. Includes any that contain additives and preservatives. Look for them on the nutrition label of the box or package. Additives and preservatives also disrupt intestinal permeability causing leaky gut.3
  • Fats. Limit deep fried foods, trans-fats, saturated fats (animal fat/butter), and EXCESSIVE omega-6 fatty acid oils like corn oil. Rancid fats, sodium caprate (a medium chain fat), and sucrose monester fatty acid (a food grade surfactant) induce significant disruption of the intestinal barrier that causes leaky gut.3.
  • Excessive Refined White Flours (bran layer removed)Includes products made from them such as cookies, bread, cakes, pies. Bran contains the vitamins and minerals that metabolize grains and slows the otherwise rapid entry of sugar from their digestion into the bloodstream. Also disrupt intestinal permeability causing leaky gut.3
  • Refined Sugars.  Includes white sugar, corn fructose and high fructose corn syrup.

  • Pepcid®, Tagamet®, Zantac® deplete Calcium, Vitamin A.

ANTIBIOTICS disrupt intestinal permeability.

The type and quantity of nutritional supplements that may be needed depend on which nutrients are deficient. Always check with your doctor to avoid interactions with medications.

  • Multivitamin/mineral combination of 100% RDA once a day is useful to improve overall nutrient levels. Just be sure you buy a supplement having the vitamin A as “retinol palmitate” and NOT “retinol acetate.”
  • Vitamiin A. If the multi does not supply 100% retinol palmitate, use a separate supplement.
  • Calcium citrate is the best absorbed of calcium supplements and of these try a pure calcium citrate powder form for best effect. Do not use the CitraCal brand because it may contain gluten. Calcium carbonate is a poor choice.
  • Biotin as needed for improvement. (See post for other symptoms.)
  • Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil) as needed for improvement. (See post for other symptoms.)

[box type=”shadow” ]Hydration. Adequate water intake is necessary to improve dry, brittle nails.

  • Eight glasses of water are recommended per day unless there is a contraindication such as kidney or heart disease. The Institute of Medicine recommends approximately 2.7 liters (91 ounces) of total water, from all beverages and foods, each day for women and 3.7 liters (125 ounces) daily of total water for men.
  • If you are thirsty, drink water. Add fresh, squeezed lemon to water. Lemon is anti-inflammatory, alkalizing and provides vitamin C.
  • Hydration Test: Urine should be pale yellow. Fingertips should be plump, without pruning but this may not be reliable when fingers are swollen with edema. Lips should be plump, without puckering. The feeling of thirst can be unreliable.
  • What is wrong with soda, coffee, tea, and alcohol? These drinks are dehydrating, increase acid, and deplete nutrients.[/box]

[box type=”shadow” ]Carminatives. The following  anti-inflammatory plant sources called carminitives help heal the digestive tract. They also tone the digestive muscles which improves peristalsis, thus aiding in the expulsion of gas from the stomach and intestine to relieve digestive colic and gastric discomfort.

Carminative Food Remedies:

  • Raspberry.
  • Carrot is also a cleansing digestive tonic.
  • Grape is also bile stimulating and a cleansing remedy for sluggish digestion and laxative.
  • Redbeets also stimulate and improve digestion and are easily digested.
  • Cabbage also stimulates and improves digestion and is also a liver decongestant.
  • Lettuce also stimulates and improves digestion and is also an alterative, meaning it improves the function of organs involved with the digestion and excretion of waste products to bring about a gradual change.
  • Potatoes are antispasmodic (due to atropine like properties) and a liver remedy.

Carminative Herb Remedies:

  • Sage is also a digestive, astringent, bile stimulant and energy tonic that heals the mucosa.  Drink as tea or use in cooking.
  • Chamomile, lemon balm, and fennel, (as a tea) also help relieve nervous tension.
  • Parsley also relieves indigestion.
  • Rosemary as a tea and in cooking also is a nervous system tonic for stress and fatigue, bile stimulant, and can relieve headaches and indigestion.
  • Thyme is also soothing remedy useful for stimulating digestion of rich, fatty foods.

Carminative Spice Remedies:

  • Cloves are also antispasmodic.
  • Nutmeg is also useful for indigestion.

What Do Medical Research Studies Tell About Brittle Nails In Celiac Disease and/or Gluten Sensitivity?

“Treatment of brittle fingernails and onychoschizia with biotin: scanning electron microscopy.” This study investigating the effect of biotin on improving brittle nails and whether the result could be corroborated by scanning electron microscopy found that biotin improves nail structure.

Researchers investigated the distal ends of the fingernails from 32 persons. They were placed into three groups: group A consisted of 10 control subjects with normal nails, group B comprised eight patients with brittle nails studied before and after biotin treatment, and group C was 14 patients with brittle nails in whom the administration of biotin did not coincide exactly with the initial and terminal clipping of the nails. The thickness of the nails in group B increased significantly by 25%. In group C, the increase was 7%. Splitting of the nails were reduced in groups B and C and the irregular cellular arrangement of the dorsal surface of brittle nails became more regular in all nails of group B and in 8 of 11 nails of group C.5
