DIETARY GUIDELINES set under Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS):
• RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowances) – RDA’s are set by the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institutes of Medicine with the goal of preventing nutrition-related disease. RDA’s are the amount of nutrients needed to prevent deficiency. More than the RDAs is needed for optimum health.
• DV (Daily Values) – DV’s are set by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) with the goal of informing consumers of what is in packaged food and supplements. On packaging labels you will notice a “Fact Label” that lists a serving size of the food or supplement and what percentage of DV’s of nutrients is contained in a serving size. Certain nutrients are required to be listed. Listing of others is optional.
