An aromatic spice obtained from the plant’s underground rhizomes that contains curcuminoid compounds of which curcumin is the most important. It is especially effective in reducing inflammation because it lowers levels of cytokines causing inflammation. Found to lower anxiety, depression, and joint pain and to reduce the risk for asthma, eczema and cancer.
Absorption from the small intestine is enhanced by consuming black pepper and fat or oil with either the culinary spice itself in cooking or supplements of turmeric or curcumin extract.
Must not be consumed if gallstones are present because it stimulates the gallbladder.
