What Is Cancer Of The Esophagus?
[dropcap]C[/dropcap]ancer of the esophagus is a malignancy arising in the stratified squamous cell lining of any part of the esophagus and having a poor prognosis.
This tumor first invades the deeper layers of the esophagus which includes the layer beneath the mucosa (submucosa) and muscle before it may invade structures close to it including the aorta and trachea. Later, it may spread to organs further away such as the liver, lungs and bones.
Q: What is the stratified squamous cell lining of the esophagus?
A: Stratified squamous cells are flat epithelial cells that are composed of several layers, called the epithelium. This type of epithelium forms the surface mucosa that lines the inside of the esophagus.
The esophagus itself is a muscular tube that transports swallowed substances to the stomach. It begins at the cricoid cartilage (Adam’s apple) as a continuation of the pharynx in the throat and ends at the lower esophageal sphincter (LES).
The LES is a circular muscle surrounding the junction of the esophagus and stomach. The LES opens to allow swallowed food and liquids to enter the stomach and closes to prevent their travelling back into the esophagus.
Who is Affected in the General Population?
Esophageal cancer is the fifth leading cause of death in men from cancer worldwide.1
What Is Cancer Of The Esophagus In Celiac Disease and/or Gluten Sensitivity?
- Cancer of the esophagus is a major complication of untreated celiac disease and may be related to vitamin A deficiency.2
- Squamous carcinomas are the type most found in celiac disease.
- This type of malignant tumor arises from cells that line the esophagus not from connective tissue or lymph tissue. Diagnosis depends entirely on biopsy.3
- Morbidity or illness due to cancer of the esophagus is significantly increased in celiac disease.4

Cancer of the esophagus is marked by these symptoms:
- Feeling of fullness in the chest.
- Pressure in the chest.
- Indigestion.
- Substernal burning developing into persistent and progressive dysphagia with tumor growth.
- Chest pain usually radiating to the back.
- Weight loss with metastasis.
How Does Cancer Of The Esophagus Develop In Celiac Disease and/or Gluten Sensitivity?
- Cancer of the esophagus possibly results from cellular damage and vitamin A deficiency.
- It is associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease GERD due to chronic esophagitis.
- It is associated with Plummer-Vinson syndrome due to iron deficiency.

Does Cancer Of The Esophagus Respond To Gluten-Free Diet?
Yes. Patients who adhere to a gluten free diet are not at increased risk of celiac disease-related cancer of the esophagus.4

- Iron as prescribed but do not take at same time as other minerals because they compete for absorption.

- Eight glasses of water are recommended per day unless there is a contraindication such as kidney or heart disease. The Institute of Medicine recommends approximately 2.7 liters (91 ounces) of total water, from all beverages and foods, each day for women and 3.7 liters (125 ounces) daily of total water for men.
- If you are thirsty, drink water. Add fresh, squeezed lemon to water. Lemon is anti-inflammatory, alkalizing and provides vitamin C.
- Hydration Test: Urine should be pale yellow. Fingertips should be plump, without pruning but this may not be reliable when fingers are swollen with edema. Lips should be plump, without puckering. The feeling of thirst can be unreliable.
- What is wrong with soda, coffee, tea, and alcohol? These drinks are dehydrating, increase acid, and deplete nutrients.[/box]

- Sage is also a digestive, astringent, bile stimulant and energy tonic that heals the mucosa. Drink as tea or use in cooking.
- Chamomile, lemon balm, and fennel, (as a tea) also help relieve nervous tension.
- Parsley also relieves indigestion.
- Rosemary as a tea and in cooking also is a nervous system tonic for stress and fatigue, bile stimulant, and can relieve headaches and indigestion.
- Thyme is also soothing remedy useful for stimulating digestion of rich, fatty foods.
Carminative Spice Remedies:
- Cloves are also antispasmodic.
- Nutmeg is also useful for indigestion.

What Do Medical Research Studies Tell About Cancer Of The Esophagus Develop In Celiac Disease and/or Gluten Sensitivity?
“Celiac disease and malignancies.” This study investigating the prevalence of cancer in celiac disease found that compared with the general population, patients with coeliac disease have an increased risk of developing enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma (EATCL), esophageal and pharyngeal squamous carcinomas and small intestinal adenocarcinomas.
The prevalence of histologically confirmed celiac disease (biopsy) in Edinburgh and the Lothians in 1979 was 61 per 100,000. The National Health Service Central Records of all 653 subjects registered at that time were flagged, allowing researchers to analyse mortality in celiac disease. At a mean of 13.5 years, mortality overall was 1.9-fold that of the general population (115 deaths observed. 61.8 expected; p < 0.0001). For both sexes the early mortality was much greater than expected, but the excess steadily diminished with time from diagnosis. Much of the increased mortality from malignant disease was accounted for by deaths from lymphoproliferative disease and esophageal cancer. Interim re-analysis after a further 9 years shows that the pattern of later deaths is consistent with these trends.3
