A lot has changed in the past few years for gluten free eaters. It’s one of the fastest growing markets. According to Foodnavigator.com, this market has grown at an average rate of 28% since 2004. Sales are estimated to be at $2.6 billion by 2012. Wow.
What does this mean for you? When companies review trends and where grocery dollars are being spent, that’s where their research and development is focused. They want a piece of the “gluten free” pie. The good news for the consumer is that there will be more and more products available in more stores.
In the San Francisco area, there are many options. If you have a local market that doesn’t carry any gluten free products, try making a request.

Teacake Bake Shop (www.teacakebakeshop.com) just added a gluten free cupcake to their menu that is delicious!!!!! It’s a Vanilla Almond Cupcake with a Swiss Meringue Buttercream! They also offer $1 Frosting shots that are GF! Thats right, I said frosting shots! Locations in Corte Madera, Lafayette, Emeryville, and Burlingame.
There’s a great shop in the Ferry Building called Mariposa’s that is completely gluten free.
The Mariposa Bakery has their HQ and bake shop in Oakland which serves full meals in addition to selling their wonderful GF products. Also try Draegers markets around the bay – http://www.draegers.com
