Click to enlarge. <em>Courtesy ACP Medicine<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<h2>What Is IgA Nephropathy?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"dropcap\">I<\/span>gA nephropathy, also called Berger&#8217;s disease, is a primary renal disease\u00a0that results when immunoglobulin A (IgA) forms deposits in the glomeruli, where it creates inflammation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">IgA nephropathy\u00a0is characterized by recurrent hematuria (blood in urine), mild proteinuria (protein in urine), and glomerular changes,<a href=\"#footnote_1_790\" id=\"identifier_1_790\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Ots M, Uibo O, Metskula K, Uibo R, Salupere V. IgA-antigliadin in patients with IgA nephropathy: the secondary phenomenon?&nbsp;American Journal of Nephrology. 1999; Vol. 19 (4), pp. 453-8.\">1<\/a>\u00a0but it is often a silent disease that may go undetected for many years.<a href=\"#footnote_2_790\" id=\"identifier_2_790\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"http:\/\/kidney.niddk.nih.gov\/kudiseases\/pubs\/glomerular\/\">2<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">IgA is an antibody that helps the body fight infections. \u00a0As IgA builds up inside the small blood vessels of the kidney, glomeruli become inflamed and damaged.<a href=\"#footnote_3_790\" id=\"identifier_3_790\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"National Library of Medicine\">3<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;line-height: 1.5em\"><strong>Q<\/strong>: What are glomeruli?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;line-height: 1.5em\"><strong>A<\/strong>: Glomeruli are\u00a0the tiny units within the kidney where blood is cleaned.\u00a0Blood enters the kidneys through arteries that branch inside the kidneys into tiny clusters of looping blood vessels. Each cluster is called a\u00a0<\/span>glomerulus<span style=\"font-size: 14px;line-height: 1.5em\">, which comes from the Greek word meaning filter. The plural form of the word is\u00a0<\/span>glomeruli<span style=\"font-size: 14px;line-height: 1.5em\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;line-height: 1.5em\">There are approximately 1 million glomeruli, or filters, in each kidney. The glomerulus is attached to the opening of a small fluid-collecting tube called a\u00a0<\/span>tubule<span style=\"font-size: 14px;line-height: 1.5em\">. Blood is filtered in the glomerulus, and extra water and wastes pass into the tubule and become urine. Eventually, the urine drains from the kidneys into the bladder through larger tubes called\u00a0<\/span>ureters<span style=\"font-size: 14px;line-height: 1.5em\">.<a href=\"#footnote_4_790\" id=\"identifier_4_790\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"http:\/\/kidney.niddk.nih.gov\/kudiseases\/pubs\/glomerular\/\">4<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">IgA nephropathy can appear suddenly (acute glomerulonephritis)\u00a0or get worse slowly over many years (chronic glomerulonephritis). Kidney disease impairs vitamin D activation in the body, resulting in bone loss.<a href=\"#footnote_3_790\" id=\"identifier_5_790\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"National Library of Medicine\">3<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>What Is IgA Nephropathy In Celiac Disease and\/or Gluten Sensitivity?<\/h2>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul class=\"cp_check red\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">IgA nephropathy is an associated disorder in celiac disease and can be a presenting feature of celiac disease that brings the patient to the doctor.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">In untreated celiac disease there are elevated blood levels of IgA antibodies which if they form deposits in the kidney may cause IgA nephropathy.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">A study examining the relationship between IgA-antigliadin antibody and clinical data concludes that IgA-antigliadin antibody are associated with the progression of IgA nephropathy. Antireticulin and antiendomysium antibody tests were negative in all patients and control sera. Findings support the current concept about the pathogenesis of IgA nehpropathy, where the defective IgA production itself may be the primary and intestinal lesions as well as the production of IgA-antigliadin, the secondary phenomenon.<a href=\"#footnote_1_790\" id=\"identifier_6_790\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Ots M, Uibo O, Metskula K, Uibo R, Salupere V. IgA-antigliadin in patients with IgA nephropathy: the secondary phenomenon?&nbsp;American Journal of Nephrology. 1999; Vol. 19 (4), pp. 453-8.\">1<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">The association between celiac disease and other immune disorders may be due to the sharing of a common genetic background, such as HLA antigens.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">However, in a very large study, involving 909 patients with celiac disease, it was\u00a0found that the development of immune disorders in celiac disease was clearly related to the duration of exposure to gluten.<a href=\"#footnote_5_790\" id=\"identifier_7_790\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"La Villa G, Pantaleo P, Tarquini R, Cirami L, Perfetto F, Mancuso F, Laffi G. Oct 2002;97(10):2572-6.\">6<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How Prevalent Is IgA Nephropathy In Celiac Disease and\/or Gluten Sensitivity?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Celiac disease occurs in 3.6%\u00a0of patients with IgA nephropathy (IgA NP), and 14% of HLA DQ2 positive patients with IgA nephropathy had celiac disease.<a href=\"#footnote_7_790\" id=\"identifier_9_790\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Collin P, Syrjanen J, Partanen J, et.al. Oct 2002;97(10):2572-6.\">7<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>What Are The Symptoms Of IgA Nephropathy?<\/h2>\n<p>IgA nephropathy is marked by these symptoms but may have no symptoms in the early stages:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"cp_bullet red\">\n<li>Fatigue that may come and go in early stage.<\/li>\n<li>Loss of appetite.<\/li>\n<li>Headache.<\/li>\n<li>Blood and protein in the urine.<\/li>\n<li>Hypertension.<\/li>\n<li>Swelling of hands and feet.<\/li>\n<li>Low blood cell count.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How Does IgA Nephropathy Develop In Celiac Disease and\/or Gluten Sensitivity?<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"cp_check red\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">IgA nephropathy results from unclear autoimmune mechanism.<a href=\"#footnote_1_790\" id=\"identifier_10_790\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Ots M, Uibo O, Metskula K, Uibo R, Salupere V. Celiac disease and HLA DQ in patients with IgA nephropathy. The American Journal of Gatroenterology. Oct 2002;97(10):2572-6.\">9<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>6 Steps To Improve IgA Nephropathy In Celiac Disease and\/or Gluten Sensitivity:<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"cp_check green\">\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #800000\"><span class=\"dropcap\"><strong>1<\/strong><\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #800000\">Remove the Trigger. Maintain a Strict, Nutritious Gluten Free Diet:<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><div class=\"box shadow\"><div class=\"box-inner-block\"><i class=\"tieicon-boxicon\"><\/i>\n\t\t\t<b>Treatment<\/b>. Restored health will enable you to maintain a strict gluten free diet, just as other life tasks will be easier.<\/li>\n<li>A strict gluten free diet means removing 100% of wheat, barley, rye and oats from the diet.<\/li>\n<li>Cutting out bread and other obvious sources of gluten is not good enough for recovery.
