Styes are treated with antibiotics and resolve. Whereas, non-infectious blepharitis does not respond to antibiotics because there is no infection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The eyelids are an important structural defense against infection and threats to the eye through blinking and tear production.\u00a0Their continual pattern of blinking every few seconds sweeps away debris and keeps the eye moistened with tears.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Tears are made by the\u00a0meibomian glands in the eyelids and consist of\u00a0fatty acids, water and mucous and also contain anti-microbial substances.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Failure of the meibomian glands to function properly, called meibomian gland dysfunction or MGD,\u00a0is a chronic, diffuse abnormality characterized by terminal duct obstruction (plugs) and\/or changes in the amount or quality of the glandular secretion called meibom (tears). This may result in alteration and\/or insufficiency of the tear film, symptoms of eye irritation, clinically apparent inflammation, and disease of the eye surface.<\/p>\n<h2>What Is Non-Infectious Blepharitis In Celiac Disease and\/or Gluten Sensitivity?<\/h2>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul class=\"cp_check red\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Non-infectious blepharitis is\u00a0a feature of vitamin A, EPA (omega-3 fatty acid), and protein deficiencies associated with malabsorption in celiac disease.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Blepharitis often occurs with seborrhea of the skin and both conditions involve vitamin A deficiency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How Prevalent is Non-Infectious Blepharitis In Celiac Disease and\/or Gluten Sensitivity?<\/h2>\n<p>Non-infectious blepharitis\u00a0has increased frequency in patients with untreated celiac disease.<\/p>\n<h2>What Are The Symptoms Of Non-Infectious Blepharitis?<\/h2>\n<p>Non-infectious blepharitis\u00a0is marked by these symptoms:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"cp_bullet red\">\n<li>Redness, thickening, and tenderness of the eyelids with exudate (pus).<\/li>\n<li>Scaling and flaking on the lid edges.<\/li>\n<li>Sometimes there is burning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How Does Non-Infectious Blepharitis Develop In Celiac Disease and\/or Gluten Sensitivity?<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"cp_check red\">\n<li>Blepharitis develops from vitamin A, \u00a0EPA (omega-3 fatty acid), and protein deficiency due to malabsorption in celiac disease.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Does Non-Infectious Blepharitis Respond To Gluten-Free Diet?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Yes.\u00a0Celiac disease-related non-infectious blepharitis\u00a0resolves on nutritious gluten free diet containing adequate vitamin A with EPA (omega-3 fatty acid) and\u00a0protein.
