See image of hand tremor (to left) courtesy of\u00a0Antonio Piedade.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Rythmic shaking may affect various parts of the body including hands, arms, legs, trunk, tongue, or vocal cords.<a href=\"#footnote_1_632\" id=\"identifier_1_632\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"http:\/\/www.ninds.nih.gov\/disorders\/tremor\/detail_tremor.htm\">1<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Causes include malnutrition, drug adverse effects especially antipsychotics, environmental toxins, and conditions such as Parkinson disease and thyroid disease, which causes toxic levels of thyroid hormone.<\/p>\n<h2>What Are Tremors In Celiac Disease and\/or Gluten Sensitivity?<\/h2>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul class=\"cp_check red\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Relationship between tremors and celiac disease.<\/strong> Tremors are a feature of nutritional deficiency associated with celiac disease<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">, especially with chronic diarrhea.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Relationship between tremors and diet.\u00a0<\/strong>A case report describes the unusual presentation of central pontine myelinosis as\u00a0tremor\u00a0for 7 days in a malnourished 4-year-old boy with recurrent diarrhea for the previous 1 year and poor weight gains subsequently found to have celiac disease. Central pontine myelinolysis is\u00a0the destruction of myelin, a substance that surrounds and protects nerve fibers in the part of the brainstem called the pons. The child&#8217;s\u00a0serum tissue transglutaminase antibody level was markedly elevated and the duodenal biopsy revealed features of\u00a0celiac disease. He also had recurrent diarrhea for the previous 1 year, and poor weight gain. Magnetic resonance of the brain was suggestive of central pontine myelinolysis. There was no evidence of electrolyte abnormalities. The serum tissue transglutaminase level was markedly elevated, and the duodenal biopsy revealed features of\u00a0celiac disease. The patient was started on gluten-free diet. The\u00a0tremor\u00a0resolved within 3 months.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Repeat imaging of the brain done 3 months after starting gluten-free diet showed complete resolution of the lesion. He suffered chronic diarrhea, abdominal distention, hypotrophic limbs, stunting and wasting, and presented hypocalcemia, anemia and high titers of serological markers (antibodies). Diagnosis of celiac disease was confirmed by a duodenal biopsy. After replacement of calcium and a gluten-free diet, the symptoms resolved within 6 weeks.
