The course can be mild or it can be fatal.\u00a0Cardiopulmonary complications from fibrosis are the most common cause of death.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Gastrointestinal problems mainly due to fibrosis affect 50 to 90% of patients.<a href=\"#footnote_1_584\" id=\"identifier_1_584\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Forbes A, Marie I. Gastrointestinal complications: the most frequent internal complications of systemic sclerosis. Rheumatology (Oxford). 2009 Jun;48 Suppl 3:iii36-9. doi: 10.1093\/rheumatology\/ ken485.\">1<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Q<\/strong>: Is there a cure for scleroderma?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>A<\/strong>: There is no cure for scleroderma. Treatment is aimed at improving symptoms.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"cp_bullet black\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Heartburn (acid reflux) can be treated with antacid drugs.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Scleroderma kidney disease can be treated with blood pressure medications called &#8220;angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors&#8221; (ACE inhibitors). These can often effectively control kidney damage if started early and use of these drugs has been a major advance for treating scleroderma.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Muscle pain and weakness can be treated with anti-inflammatory drugs such as prednisone, intravenous immunoglobin (IVIg), and\/or immunosuppressive medications. Physical therapy may be useful to maintain joint and skin flexibility.<a href=\"#footnote_2_584\" id=\"identifier_2_584\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"http:\/\/www.rheumatology.org\">2<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What Is Scleroderma In Celiac Disease and\/or Gluten Sensitivity?<\/h2>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul class=\"cp_check red\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Relationship between scleroderma and celiac disease.<\/strong> Scleroderma is an immune disorder associated with celiac disease.\u00a0The association between celiac disease and other immune disorders may be due to the sharing of a common genetic background, such as HLA antigens. However, in a very large study, involving 909 patients with celiac disease, Ventura and his associates found that the development of immune disorders in Celiac Disease was clearly related to the duration of exposure to gluten.<a href=\"#footnote_3_584\" id=\"identifier_3_584\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"La Villa G, Pantaleo P, Tarquini R, Cirami L, Perfetto F, Mancuso F, Laffi G. Multiple immune disorders in unrecognized celiac disease: a case report. World J Gastroenterol. 2003;9(6):1377-1380.\">3<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Relationship between scleroderma and malabsorption.\u00a0<\/strong>Celiac disease may account for malabsorption in scleroderma even when tests suggest bacterial overgrowth.\u00a0A small bowel biopsy is essential.<a href=\"#footnote_4_584\" id=\"identifier_4_584\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Marguerie C, Kaye S, Vyse T, Mackworth-Young C, Walport MJ, Black C. Malabsorption caused by coeliac disease in patients who have scleroderma. British Journal of Rheumatology. Sep 1995;34(9):858-61.\">4<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How Prevalent Is Scleroderma In Celiac Disease and\/or Gluten Sensitivity?<\/h2>\n<p>Prevalence of 4 % to 8% has been shown in 2 small studies:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The incidence of celiac disease in 50 patients with systemic sclerosis was found to be 8%.<a href=\"#footnote_5_584\" id=\"identifier_5_584\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Rosato E, De Nitto D, Rossi C, Libanori V, Donato G, Di Tola M, Pisarri S, Salsano F, Picarelli A. Epub 2009 Mar 30.\">5<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">A study investigating stored blood for the prevalence of celiac disease found a prevalence of 3 patients with celiac antibodies (4%) in a systemic sclerosis population of 72 patients.<a href=\"#footnote_6_584\" id=\"identifier_6_584\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Forbess LJ, Gordon JK, Doobay K, Bosworth BP, Lyman S, Davids ML, Spiera RF. Low prevalence of coeliac disease in patients with systemic sclerosis: a cross-sectional study of a registry cohort. Rheumatology (Oxford). 2013 May;52(5):939-43. doi: 10.1093\/rheumatology\/kes390.\">6<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>What Are The Symptoms Of Scleroderma?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Skin \u00a0manifestations.\u00a0First phase includes<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"cp_bullet red\">\n<li>Fingers or toes that turn blue or white in response to hot and cold temperatures (Raynaud&#8217;s disease). May result in ulcers.<\/li>\n<li>Skin is swollen, shiny, itchy and\u00a0has small tender nodules.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fibrotic phase:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"cp_bullet red\">\n<li>Decreased swelling and thickening of the skin.<\/li>\n<li>Skin very dry and tight with\u00a0stiffness, and tightness of fingers, hands, and forearm.<\/li>\n<li>Tight and mask-like skin on the face.<\/li>\n<li>Hair loss.<\/li>\n<li>Skin becomes abnormally dark or light.<\/li>\n<li>Skin hardness within weeks to months. Affected skin feels bound to underlying tissues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Third atrophic phase:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"cp_bullet red\">\n<li>Skin softens as fibrosis diminishes.<\/li>\n<li>Calcinosis. Small white lumps beneath the skin, sometimes oozing a white substance that looks like toothpaste.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Bone and muscle symptoms may include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"cp_bullet red\">\n<li>Joint pain.<\/li>\n<li>Numbness and pain in the feet.<\/li>\n<li>Pain, stiffness, and swelling of fingers and joints.<\/li>\n<li>Wrist pain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Breathing problems may result from scarring in the lungs and can include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"cp_bullet red\">\n<li>Dry cough.<\/li>\n<li>Shortness of breath.<\/li>\n<li>Wheezing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Digestive tract problems may include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"cp_bullet red\">\n<li>Bloating after meals.<\/li>\n<li>Constipation.<\/li>\n<li>Diarrhea.<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty swallowing.<\/li>\n<li>Esophageal reflux or heartburn.<\/li>\n<li>Problems controlling stools.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How Does Scleroderma In Celiac Disease and\/or Gluten Sensitivity Develop?<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"cp_check red\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Scleroderma results from an autoimmune mechanism; the mechanism between scleroderma and celiac disease is unclear.\u00a0Autoimmune means the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys healthy body tissue which in scleroderma is widespread.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Does Scleroderma In Celiac Disease and\/or Gluten Sensitivity Respond To Gluten-Free Diet?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Studies are inadequate to determine the effect however, \u00a0a gluten free diet will prevent increased disease from malnutrition and malignancy from failed diagnosis of celiac disease.<\/p>\n<h2>6 Steps To Improve Scleoderma In Celiac Disease and\/or Gluten Sensitivity:<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"cp_check green\">\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #800000\"><span class=\"dropcap\"><strong>1<\/strong><\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #800000\">Remove the Trigger. Maintain a Strict, Nutritious Gluten Free Diet:<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><div class=\"box shadow\"><div class=\"box-inner-block\"><i class=\"tieicon-boxicon\"><\/i>\n\t\t\t<b>Treatment<\/b>. This condition responds to the complete elimination of gluten, which is the required treatment that improves both scleroderma and gut health.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"cp_bullet green\" style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li>Gut health is the foundation to restore ALL health.
