White is fat accumulation in degenerated cells. <em>Courtesy of Nephron&#8217;s work.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<h2>What Is Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"dropcap\">N<\/span>on-alcoholic fatty liver is a non-inflammatory liver disorder characterized by degenerative changes in the liver caused by excessive accumulation of lipid (fat) in hepatocytes (liver cells) that is called free fatty acid-generated lipotoxicity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Non-alcoholic fatty liver shows an increase in liver enzymes called transaminases.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Q<\/strong>: What are the enzymes that increase?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>A<\/strong>: The transaminases that increase are ALT and AST. ALT is the abbreviation for alanine aminotransferase enzyme and AST is the\u00a0abbreviation for\u00a0aspartate aminotransferase enzyme. They are commonly measured in blood tests to determine liver function and when elevated indicate inflammation.<\/p>\n<h2>What Is Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver In Celiac Disease and\/or Gluten Sensitivity?<\/h2>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul class=\"cp_check red\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Relationship between non-alcoholic fatty liver and celiac disease.<\/strong> Non-alcoholic fatty liver is a complication of celiac disease. A nationwide study found excess risks were highest in the first year after celiac disease diagnosis, but persisted through 15 years beyond diagnosis with celiac disease. The highest risk estimates were seen in children.<a href=\"#footnote_1_433\" id=\"identifier_1_433\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Reilly NR, Lebwohl B, Hultcrantz R, Green PH, Ludvigsson JF.
