Actors, Athletes, News Anchors, and More Follow the Gluten-free Diet

JenniferAnistonWhether people are eating gluten free for medical reasons or non-medical reasons, the plain fact is more and more people are following the examples set by celebrities and athletes who attribute eating gluten free to losing weight and for its ability to increase athletic performance. Whatever the reason, celebrities, athletes, reporters, etc. continue to follow a gluten-free diet, so it is time to update the lists I started back in 2010.

I think it is important to separate out those who are eating gluten free for medical from those who eat gluten free for or non-medical reasons, so there are five lists below: Celebrities with Celiac Disease, Celebrities with non-celiac gluten sensitivity/wheat intolerance, Celebrities who eat gluten free by choice, Athletes with Celiac Disease, and Athletes who eat gluten free by choice. Celebrities and athletes living gluten-free are casting a much-needed light on the lifestyle changes that accompany a gluten-free diet. With their openness about their symptoms, dietary changes and more, athletes and celebrities in the spotlight are proving that celiac disease and gluten sensitivity are more prevalent than is currently known, that these conditions affects all kinds of people, and that abiding by a gluten-free diet does not stop them from living the life they love.

Celebrities Who Eat Gluten-free…the Numbers are Growing!

Billy Bob Thornton Gluten FreeIn light of the recent article by Huffington Post entitled “Famous and Gluten Free?” it seems like the perfect time to update my article on celebrities who have been diagnosed with Celiac Disease to include those who are also gluten sensitive, wheat intolerant, or those who choose to eat gluten-free foods.

The term gluten free is being used in the media quite often.  Sometimes it is use appropriately and other times the gluten-free diet is touted as a ‘fad diet’, ‘weight-loss diet’, ‘dangerous diet’, etc. Jeopardy recently used gluten free foods as a category.

FSU Quarterback Clint Trickett Goes Gluten Free After Celiac Disease Diagnosis

Clint Trickett Gluten Free Celiac DiseaseAt 6’2″ and just 165 lbs, Florida State quarterback Clint Trickett was consuming 4,500 calories a day earlier this summer to try to put on weight.

It wasn’t working.

“I had some blood work done, I had a biopsy,” Trickett said during a recent  meeting with Florida State beat writers. “And they said, ‘You have Celiac disease.’ And it started making sense.”

Trickett adopted a gluten-free diet and within a month started to see results.

Gluten-free celebrities on the rise! Madonna serves gluten-free goodies.

 

The latest celebrity to announce her affinity for the gluten-free diet is the one and only, Madonna.  In celebration of her 52nd birthday and her son’s 10th, the Queen of Pop will be hosting a party with a King and Queen theme. Madge does not maintain a strictly gluten-free diet, but announced that some GF treats including brownies will be served at the high-profile fête.
