Wendy's has always been good about listing a list of their products on their website that are gluten-free. This list has just been updated as of February 2010. Please pay special attention as it appears that some of the salads have been removed from the list.

Items that are no longer on the gluten-free list (it is not clear whether these items are no longer offered or if they have changed gluten-free status due to suppliers or recipe changes.) (Read more…)

A lot has changed in the past few years for gluten free eaters. It's one of the fastest growing markets. According to Foodnavigator.com, this market has grown at an average rate of 28% since 2004. Sales are estimated to be at $2.6 billion by 2012. Wow.

What does this mean for you? When companies review trends and where grocery dollars are being spent, that's where their research and development is focused. They want a piece of the "gluten free" pie. The good news for the consumer is that there will be more and more products available in more stores. (Read more…)

Recipe: Gluten Free Turkey Chili Soup with No Beans and No Weird Ingredients!

By Randi Markowitz

This is a recipe that I love to make, especially when it's a little chilly outside. This recipe as written serves 4, but it can be doubled to serve 8. It has hominy in it, which are delicious starchy balls of corn grits. Somewhere between a soup and a stew, this recipe is fast and easy and gluten free, and the smell of the chili powders and cumin is absolutely fantastic!! (Read more…)

Jenny McCarthy’s “controversial” Take on Autism Featured in TIME Magazine

By Liz Schau

Jenny McCarthy, actress, author, and biomedical Autism treatment activist is featured in a TIME Magazine article this week, The Autism Vaccine Debate: Who's Afraid of Jenny McCarthy? Since claiming she successfully healed her son, Evan, 7, of Autism via unconventional natural methods and cutting-edge technology, and subsequently blaming the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine for Evan's Autism, McCarthy has received immense criticism from the mainstream medical community; they say she's offering hope to parents of children with Autism when indeed, there is none.

According to McCarthy, biomedical treatments are defined as those interventions that address "…physical ailments like epilepsy, leaky gut, candida, bowel disease, and food allergies." She goes on to say, (Read more…)

Gluten Free Recipe: Meat Free Monday Tacos

By Kaitlin Fleming

Its meat free Monday today and I’m making tacos tonight for dinner. I’ve been experimenting with tofu a lot lately, sometimes succeeding and other times not so much.

I’ve found that the crucial detail to remember is that it important to cook the tofu in very flavorful sauces and seasonings. Tofu absorbs whatever flavor you cook it in.

Tacos are one of my favorites foods that can be made gluten free and vegetarian very easily. I use corn tortillas over the gluten free ones you can find because I find they taste better and always make sure your sauces are gluten free. (Read more…)

Product Review: GFL Foods, Inc. Gluten-free Pita Bread Let’s You Get Stuffed

By Jennifer Harris

Whenever asked what product is thought to be missing from the thousands of available gluten-free products, my number one response is always gluten-free pita bread. In my 13 years on the gluten-free diet finding out about GFL Foods, Inc. gluten-free pita bread made my diagnosis. Gluten-free pita bread is one product that this Examiner has truly missed and is thrilled it has become available in the gluten-free market.

Rami Aharon, owner of GFL Foods, Inc., set out to create a gluten-free pita when his son was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. After several attempts, they finally created what they considered to be the 'best ever gluten-free pita' and this Examiner agrees. (Read more…)

According to the Centers for Disease Control, as of 2006, 33.1% of women were choosing to exclusively breastfeed their newborn from 0-3 months of age. At the one-year mark, only 22.7% of women were still breastfeeding their baby (non-exclusively).

The American Academy of Pediatrics Committee, the World Health Organization (WHO), the Canadian Pediatric Society, the Pediatric Society of New Zealand, and other similar organizations in various countries worldwide have all made statements on infant feeding and the appropriate time to introduce solid foods into a baby's diet.

The current consensus is that solid food should not be introduced until at least the age of 4-6 months, if not later. (Read more…)

Gluten-free Tiramisu Recipe with Shabtai Lady Fingers

By Anne Steib

Tiramisu has always been one of my favorite indulgences since my first trip to Italy, in the late 80s, and trying the real thing. The key is having the right cream, because without that, it just tastes like something mass produced you would expect to find in a grocery store.

Of course the lady fingers are a main ingredient as well, and being gluten-free, that become a new challenge. Luckily, I had a box of Shabtai Lady Fingers on hand, so I was good to go! I decided to forgo the usual raw egg in the cream, because that just doesn't sound appetizing the more I learn about food. The whipped heavy cream takes the place of the raw eggs in this recipe. I never said it was healthy! (Read more…)

Product Review: Joan’s Gluten-free Great Bakes English Muffins

By Kimberly Bouldin

I have tasted some of Joan's GF Great Bakes products and reviewed them a while back, but I hadn't had the chance to sample the English muffin. I was tweeting last week with another gluten-free friend, Jen, & she mentioned how much she loved Joan's English muffins. She went on to say that they were her favorite gluten-free English muffin. That was all I needed to hear. I usually buy Trader Joe's French rolls or Kinnikinnick's English Muffins, as they are much less expensive. (Read more…)

Penny Pinching on The Gluten-free Diet

Current economic conditions have challenged many people to look for ways to cut expenses. This problem is compounded when you’re a celiac because gluten-free foods can be expensive. Still, there are ways to trim the budget without sacrificing the foods you need and love.

1. Making a weekly menu plan reduces trips to the grocery store, saving both fuel and impulse spending. Check your pantry, refrigerator, and freezer to see what foods you can use that you already have on hand (cutting food cost for the week). (Read more…)
