We’re lucky that there are more and more recipes out there that taste just like the real thing. But for many people, it s easier to make some desserts that happen to be gluten-free, rather than gluten-free adaptations of “normal” foods.
Foods that are naturally gluten free avoid the expensive specialty flours. Personally, I am not a fan of spending a lot for specialty flours when I’m sharing with many non-GF folks. This avoids the inevitable complaints of friends or family who won’t even try GF foods just because they’ve decided they won’t like it.

Decorated gluten-free sugar cookies are fast and easy to make using a food processor to mix the cookie dough. You can use either amaranth flour or a combination of rice flours to prepare this recipe, both work well.
I loved the idea of gifting my homemade cake stands to friends and families for the holidays. (Thanks everyone!)
Thing is – you can’t really give a cake stand to someone without having treats on it, especially if they know that you love to bake.
So I tried to figure out what seasonal recipe I could make for the stands that I could prepare ahead of time, freeze, would appeal to everyone I know (gluten-free, vegan, egg allergies, potato allergies etc), and will stay on the stand with little concern of things breaking.

Everyone loves Chex-style snack mixes. Our holiday blend is a twist on the original recipe. Poultry seasoning, dried cranberries and crisp gluten-free crackers add just the right holiday flavor in this fast and easy gluten-free snack mix recipe.
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 1 hour
Total Time: 1 hour, 15 minutes
Yield: About 12 cups snack mix
I’m not sure if I’ve ever talked about my parents’ obsession with moving change.
I lived in a total of 12 houses in the first 17 years of my life.
Now, you may not think that’s a lot, but when you factor in that 6 of those 12 were temporary houses while our next house was being complete, that’s a heck of a lot of packing and unpacking in a short amount of time.
Sometimes these temporary houses would have a full kitchen, sometimes they wouldn’t. Sometimes they had a bedroom, sometimes they did not.

Earlier this year this Examiner put together a wish list of gluten-free products we would like to see hit grocery store shelves. Some of the items have been developed and will come out at the end of this year, or early next year. There are also some items this Examiner didn’t have on her list that have been introduced and some items we are still waiting on.
It seems only appropriate as we are drawing to the end of 2011 to recap some of the first-to-market gluten-free products that have hit or are about to hit store shelves this year.

Now that there are Gluten Free Rice Krispies available at the main stream grocery store, my family will be making these classic treats for many occasions. The kids LOVE helping to make these sweet treats and they couldn’t be any easier. 4 ingredients and you are done.
5 Tablespoons butter or non-dairy butter (we use Earth Balance Buttery Sticks)
1 bag of 40 marshmallows
7 cups of Gluten Free Rice Krispies by Kelloggs
Icing or Frosting for decorating
In a large pot melt the butter over medium heat. Add the marshmallows and stir until melted.
Slowly add the cereal and stir until combined. Transfer to a spray-oiled 9×13 pan. Press into the pan. Allow to cool and then cut into pieces. Decorate if desired.
If you have ever been in a social situation and can’t have the food around the buffet table, whether it’s related to allergies, religion or weight loss, it can be quite difficult.
What if it was the other way around? Imagine arriving and being able to eat everything! I thought it would be useful to create some ideas for gluten-free occasions (after getting some great advice from Amy Sherman of Cooking with Amy). So here is my first holiday list: Halloween.
Maybe you are the host and you are getting ready for a ghoulish party. If you need to plan it around one or more gluten-free eaters, you might need some ideas beyond hummus and rice crackers or tortilla chips with guacamole.

When you are doing your planning, think about the items that you can’t eat when you are gluten-free: bread, crackers, pretzels, pizza, cookies, cakes and cupcakes, doughnuts. Today, there are many options for all of these items. Of course, if you are the one hosting, you will have much more control. That’s my plan this year; delegation! And, even if you aren’t gluten-free, you can use the ideas below to plan your own party.

Homemade caramel corn is buttery, crunchy, sweet and best of all it’s naturally gluten free. And it’s so buttery fresh, a quality hard to find in a can or bag! If you like, use organic popcorn, butter, sugar and agave syrup for an extra special treat.
Last year (almost to the day) I posted a recipe for Fruity Pebble Treats after I had gotten “glutened” by eating a rice krispy treat – silly me for missing the MALT flavor ingredient (see my post about the new gluten-free Rice Krispies here). So instead of making the same mistake twice, I followed the advice of one of my readers, Kristi, and made the crispy treats using Fruity Pebbles (I’ve also made them with the cocoa pebbles and both are awesome!). Before making these I called Post to double-check that these two cereals were in fact gluten-free and was assured that they were gluten-free. You can check out the original post here.
