This Examiner has been a fan of the gluten-free products from Amy’s Kitchen for more than a decade. Their line of gluten-free convenience foods, prepared meals, pizzas, wraps and desserts can always be found in my freezer.
We like knowing we are eating quality food that is made with organic ingredients that are GMO free and contain zero trans fats. We also love that they don’t just stick to one type of cuisine and include Indian, Italian and Asian dishes.
What a lot of people don’t know about this family-oriented company is that (more…)
Admittedly, I have not been able to try all the products that they sent (there are a lot!) but I had so much fun trying what I have so far. I probably never would have sought out these products on my own. I could give or take most candy (chocolate is another story…) but now I know just where to turn for something sweet or sour!
This is the entire package I got in the mail. The individual packs are bigger and have multiple servings. The boxes contain smaller packs and are a single serving (I prefer this because it’s easier to control portion size.) When I was
eating the sour gummy worms out of the bigger bag, I definitely (more…)
Osteoporosis, or brittle bones, is a generalized bone disorder involving the slow loss of bone mass throughout the skeleton that results in diminished bone mineral density (BMD). Thinning, fragile bones maintain normal cell appearance but have a rapid turnover so that more bone is taken up and removed than is laid down. The result is bone weakness that predisposes people with osteoporosis to fractures.
Osteopenia refers to the progression of bone tissue loss in the range between normal to osteoporosis.
What are Bones?
Bones are dynamic structures made up of living connective tissue and certain minerals. Connective tissue provides the shape of bones and holds calcium phosphate mineral for hardness and (more…)
About one month ago, I put out my Breakfast Millet article to rave reviews. I had gotten so many emails thanking me for putting out the article and most of them requesting that I put out another one for a savory millet dish. As I am not one to disappoint may I just say…..the millet saga continues.
I seriously never get tired of talking about millet. Delicious, healthy and versatile millet is a lot like rice and can be the vehicle to transform even the most mundane dish into something exciting. To get the scoop on the health aspects and back story of millet, (more…)
The holidays are fast upon us, and not only do we have to plan the Thanksgiving meal, but the Thanksgiving leftovers as well. Usually in my house there are lots of turkey and maybe some potatoes, the stuffing is almost always the first thing to go. But after so long, cold turkey sandwiches and turkey and gravy tend to get a bit bland. I came up with this recipe last year when all I had left after the dust has settled was turkey, enjoy! (more…)
It’s easy to make your own fresh cranberry sauce with just a few ingredients. This version has much less sugar than what you would find in a can. Give it a try. If you don’t think you’ll use all of the cranberries, cut the recipe in half and use the berries in a muffin or loaf.
Ingredients:
3/4 cup water or orange juice (use less sugar if using the juice)
1/3 c organic white sugar or sucanat
1/3 c agave nectar (optionally use honey or all sugar)
4 cups (1 12-oz package) fresh or frozen cranberries, rinsed
Optional ingredients: 1/2 cup toasted pecans or walnuts, chopped; orange zest from 1/2 of an orange; (more…)
I can’t believe that it is almost Thanksgiving! Where has this year gone to, or this month further more lol The fall is flying by, and I must say I’m loving it since I love the holidays. This is the first year that I will not be participating in the traditional Thanksgiving meal with family, as my Mother and I will be venturing to NYC for the week!
I did though, however, prepare for this and the Christmas holiday meals by recreating my absolute favorite side dish. I thought my holidays would be ruined when I went gluten free and thought I’d never eat my Mother’s stuffing again! I’m pretty crafty, so I of course I found a way to avoid a major meltdown at the dinner table.
I knew a meltdown was certain to happen if I had to watch others eat stuffing in front of me, dun dun dun….so I found a gluten free stuffing mix and recreated Mom’s recipe, and it tastes exactly the same! (more…)

With the Thanksgiving holiday quickly approaching,I have been itching to find ways to eat the leftover turkey. I know this may seem odd,as there is no leftover turkey yet,but I am anticipating leftovers,as we have never not had them. I wanted to get creative this year and mix things up. Yeah, turkey soup and mashed potato bowls are great, but I wanted to create a unique turkey sandwich. I didn’t want anything complicated, just a different way to enjoy the (more…)
