Review: Exotic Gluten Free Simmer Sauces from Saffron Road

September 10th, 2012 by Cinde Shields

I enjoy preparing from scratch home cooked meals for my family, but on especially busy weeknights I sometimes use a few prepared foods to help speed up the process.  Prepared foods typically contain less than healthy ingredients, so I opt for all natural products such as the new gluten free Simmer Sauces from Saffron Road.Saffron Road’s gluten free Simmer Sauces come in four flavors, each a unique taste of world cuisine.  My family had the pleasure of sampling the following simmer sauce flavors, which I am happy to report are also dairy free: (more…)

Big Lots Surprises With Lots of Gluten-Free Products

September 6th, 2012 by Trish Deitemeyer

bob's red mill gluten free brownie mixYou expect to find gluten-free food online and in health food stores and big grocery stores, but you never anticipate finding it in your local discount store. I was recently pleasantly surprised to find, among the curling irons and cat food, many GF products in Big Lots, the largest broadline closeout retailer in the U.S.

Big Lots has recently begun carrying several types of Bob’s Red Mill products, most of them gluten-free, and all of them much cheaper than they can be purchased on-line or in a grocery store. I bought Bob’s Gluten-Free Shortbread Cookie Mix and Pizza Crust Mix for 2.90 and a bag of Bob’s Cinnamon Raisin Bread Mix for 3.95. In my regular grocery store, these mixes run from 4.95 – 6.95. Big Lots also carries a few brands of GF pasta, all for under 2.00 per package. And you can always find (more…)

Better 4 U Pizza Gluten Free Dairy Free

Every Wednesday I look forward to watching the weekly video of new product reviews from Phil Lempert, The Supermarket Guru, because usually at least one gluten-free product is included in each episode. After scoring a hit (85 and above) of an 88, this Examiner was very interested to sample the gluten-free pizza from Better 4U Foods.

Unfortunately I cannot tolerate dairy or soy and it is quite difficult to find a dairy/soy-free, gluten-free pizza. In steps Better 4U Foods with their dairy/soy free roasted vegetable pizza made with Daiya cheese and a multi-grain crust made with (more…)

Gluten-free, Dairy-free, Egg-free Vegan Pancake Recipe

Gluten-free, Dairy-free, Egg-free Vegan Pancakes

Gluten-free, Dairy-free, Egg-free and Delicious! Photo: Amy Fothergill

Yes, I hit the trifecta on this recipe. I was able to successfully make a pancake without gluten, dairy (in essence, casein) and eggs! It is a vegan, gluten-free pancake.

I have been cooking gluten-free for 5 years. That I have figured out. I like to use my own blend (see the recipe for the link) in place of flour. I have found, through trial and error, that the pancake is better with some xanthan gum. It holds together better.

Substituting the milk is easy. There are many milk substitutes like soy, rice, coconut, hemp, and almond. If you use something sweetened, cut back on the sugar in the recipe. Instead of butter, you can use (more…)

Is Lady Gaga Going Gluten Free For Her Health??

According to a news release on MSN.com, Stefani Germanotta (a.k.a. Lady Gaga) is the newest celebrity to say she’s going gluten-free. She made the announcement on the latest leg of her ‘Born This Way Ball’ tour.

She is described as doing so in order to “make sure she is in the best shape for the grueling workout.”

Then the article drops a bombshell… “Her aim is to drop 10 lbs in a month.”

This is where celiac disease experts, bloggers and media know-it-alls usually start lobbing grenades.

Why the Big Deal?

Celiac disease and gluten sensitivity are serious medical conditions that require a gluten-free diet. Many people diagnosed with one or both disorders chafe at the fact that they cannot eat what they want. While a diagnosis is important, medical professionals and the media emphatically make the groundless claim that the gluten-free diet can be bad for your health unless you are medically diagnosed with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.

Lady Gaga is reported to have neither celiac disease nor gluten sensitivity in the MSN article. The article emphasizes her aim to use the diet to get (more…)
