Surviving a Gluten Free Life

June 3rd, 2013 by Patricia Middendorf

Gluten Free is heard everywhere nowadays.  It’s seems to be as popular as the vegan diet years ago.

Unfortunately gluten free is not a fad, or a diet, it is a way of life for those with Celiac Disease and gluten sensitivity.

gluten free livingThose of us, including myself, need to check everything that we eat which can honestly be a royal pain, but the good news is that most places are gluten aware.  There are those hole in the wall places in the middle of nowhere that we can never find anything to eat, but we can always pack a snack.

The first time that you go grocery shopping or out to eat can be overwhelming after being told that you (more…)

It has happened to most all of us at one time or another. You have just finished a meal at a restaurant when you notice you aren’t quite feeling right. For me, that starts with a stabbing headache and a hot flash. Immediately you know your meal has come into contact with gluten. Now what do you do? How can you turn your negative experience into a positive one? (more…)

Philly is one of the most gluten-free friendly cities in the country. So much so, it’s been called “the first gluten-free neighborhood in the U.S.”

It takes a lot of components to come together to make a great GF city.

It helps if your state is no stranger to the gluten-free way of life. Earlier this year, Gluten Free Travel Site named Pennsylvania the “World’s Most Celiac-Friendly Destination.” We examined this accolade in (more…)

If there was a ‘Magic’ Gluten-Free Pill

January 12th, 2013 by Laura Hanley

Gluten-eaters often ask me, “Don’t you wish there was some ‘magic’ pill?”

This question arises when I have limited choices on a menu, or have to pass the basket of bread without indulging. My response usually includes a “Not really”, with some type of short explanation on why my life doesn’t suck because I’m gluten-free.

If there was a magic pill that enabled you to eat gluten, would you use it?

I can honestly say that I don’t feel like I’m missing out. I am happy with my diet. Just because I can’t choose a roll from the gluten-filled bread basket, doesn’t mean my life has crumbled into ruins.

So if there was a pill, would I take it? If I had the ability to indulge in gluten-filled food with the comfort of knowing the so-called ‘magic’ pill would alleviate my symptoms as well as prevent the damage to my intestines, would I be poppin’ it back on the regular? (more…)

Keeping Holidays Healthy & Gluten-Free

December 11th, 2012 by Kimberly Bouldin

Now that Thanksgiving is over, the next few weeks are likely to be filled with many treats of the food and drink variety.  Following the gluten-free diet can be helpful in avoiding some of those treats; don’t view having to avoid these gluten-filled treats as a bad thing – view it as avoiding excess calories and fat and treat yourself to something that is gluten-free and worth a small indulgence.  Those small indulgences can be a glass of red wine with dinner, a small serving of dark chocolate or even something non-food related like a new workout top, a book that has been on your “must read” list or some new tunes for your workout playlist.

If Holiday treats are unavoidable, try to practice smart portion control and (more…)
