The world of gluten-free is just bursting with news this month.  It almost seems like there is more going on this month than the last quarter of 2010.  Great new for the gluten-free community, but it definitely makes it harder to keep up with the onslaught of new information.

Listed below is the gluten-free news this Examiner has heard about this past week.

  • Breads from Anna is getting ready to launch two new gluten-free mixes: Black Bean Brownie and Pizza Crust.  More details can be found here.

  • Kikkoman's new gluten-free soy sauce is a Tamari-style soy sauce brewed with rice instead of wheat. Take note, though, that the sodium content (960 mg per one-tablespoon serving) is high compared with reduced-sodium, gluten-free soy sauces produced bySan-JLa Choy and Kari-Out.  Thanks for Gluten Free Philly for the information.

Arby’s offers up gluten-free menu

August 16th, 2010 by Kimberly Bouldin

Over the past few years more & more restaurants have been adding gluten-free menus to their repertoire.  This is a much welcomed change to people who have had to follow the diet for any period of time.  Simply being able to order off of the menu and not bring food in from the outside is a pleasure.

Arby's is the latest establishment in this explosion of gluten-free menus.  Arby's has multiple meat items, several salads, drinks & even shakes on the menu.  The French fries and potato cakes are off limits due to cross-contamination issues; sharing the deep fryer with chicken fingers, chicken patties and mozzarella sticks makes them unsafe. I'll admit it - sometimes all I want to have for dinner is some fruit, cheese, and if I'm feeling extra adventurous, chocolate.  But fresh fruit dipped in chocolate and other savory items dipped in cheese?  Now you're talking.

The Melting Pot is a delightful fondue restaurant that offers you all the cheese and chocolate until your heart's content (they offer other yummy items too).  And now they have a special gluten-free menu, so you don't have to worry about cross-contamination.

In a cheesy mood?  The Spinach Artichoke or Wisconsin Trio (request that the fondue be made with cornstarch) are must-haves.  The vegetables and apple slices provided are perfect dipping accompaniments. (more…)

Back in February I wrote an article on Wendy's updated gluten-free menu.  I wrote the article mainly because they removed a lot of the salads that had previously been listed as gluten-free.  The menu has been updated again.  Fast food restaurants tend to change offerings based on the season, so I applaud Wendy's for keeping us informed.

The current gluten-free menu for Wendy's can be viewed here.  The Baja Salad has been added to the gluten-free list.  This salad contains much of the same ingredients that the Southwest Taco Salad did or does.  While the gluten-free menu still lists the Southwest Taco Salad, the regular online menu does not. Uno Chicago Grill Makes Gluten Free Eaters Happy

May 13th, 2010 by Trish Deitemeyer

I've been gluten free since 2002, and I'm embarrassed to say that up until a few weeks ago, I hadn't tried Uno Chicago Grill's Gluten Free menu, which they've been offering for almost 2 years. Actually, the last time I was there, it was still called "Pizzeria Uno". But recently, a bunch of us were stuck at Washington, DC's Union Station for a couple of hours, and there just happened to be a Uno's there, which seemed to be the only restaurant in the station offering gluten free foods.

I was pleasantly surprised. No - really, I was GIDDY! There was pizza! There was beer (Redbridge)! There was dessert! (more…)

Not long ago, I realized that one of my very favorite all-time restaurants is actually known for being gluten-free! I never realized this before since I just loved going there, because they serve my ultimate comfort food, risotto. That was what mattered to me. If there was only one meal I could eat for the rest of my life, it would risotto, and Risotteria in New York City has always been a stop whenever I am in town. Risotteria opened in early 1999, and has been a popular stop for gluten-free diners and fans of good food alike, for over a decade.

In addition to risotto, Risotteria also serves gluten-free pizza, salad, panini, breadsticks and pasta. Pasta is served on Tuesdays. As their web site states they are gluten-free every hour or every day. To top off this already impressive list, Risotteria has mastered the art of baking gluten-free treats. (more…)

Wendy’s updates gluten-free menu

March 1st, 2010 by Kimberly Bouldin

Wendy's has always been good about listing a list of their products on their website that are gluten-free. This list has just been updated as of February 2010. Please pay special attention as it appears that some of the salads have been removed from the list.

Items that are no longer on the gluten-free list (it is not clear whether these items are no longer offered or if they have changed gluten-free status due to suppliers or recipe changes.) (more…)
