This week’s Friday’s Find makes this Smoothie Queen very happy.  Not only is it made by a company that I already love, but it opens up flavor options without added sugar.  I love So Delicious Coconut Milk, but I usually purchase the unsweetened version to avoid sugar.  I have to admit that I do look longingly at the Vanilla, because it is truly sooooo delicious.  In coffee, over cereal, in smoothies, it’s just wonderful. But since I’ve cut out sugar, the vanilla sweetness has been but a lovely memory.

Until now.

This week I happened to see a carton of So Delicious Sugar-Free Vanilla Coconut Milk at Whole Foods.  While I was thrilled to see that it didn’t have cane sugar, I took a good hard look at the ingredients hoping that I wouldn’t find artificial sweeteners instead.  I was glad to see that it is sweetened with stevia and monk fruit.  Sweet!  Tempted to fill my cart, I decided to take just one box and see how I liked it first.

I should have filled the cart.

Gluten Free Product Review: Gefen Vanilla Wafers

August 17th, 2011 by Jennifer Harris

Gluten Free Works Jennifer Harris

It has finally happened...the gluten-free answer to the vanilla wafer has been discovered and it is the vanilla cookies made by Gefen.  Now for the bad news...they are only available during Passover and they are made in Israel.

Gefen Gluten Free Vanilla CookiesWhile strolling the aisles at a local Super Target we discovered Gefen's vanilla cookies on clearance for $3.90 per box. What really caught my attention was the Celiac Disease Foundation logo on the box.  The cookies are made from: potato starch, sugar, whole eggs, palm oil and vanilla.  Somehow we just knew they were going to taste amazing and they do.

These cookies remind me of a vanilla wafer crossed with (more…)

Chick-fil-A-sweet-potato-fries

Crunchy on the outside! Creamy on the inside!

Back in May Chick-fil-A added sweet potato waffle fries to their menu. The sweet potato fries are still in development, so they are just gathering feedback at this time, which also means they are only available in select locations.

Unfortunately, they were not available anywhere in Atlanta, but you can get them until August 31st at Chick-fil-A in Athens, GA.

Chick-fil-A is a great place to get fast food if you are on the gluten-free diet because (more…)

For over 200 years, King Arthur Flour has built an impressive reputation for its consistent, high-quality, all natural baking flours.

Now the company has entered the gluten-free market with eight new gluten-free mixes: Pizza Crust Mix, Cookies Mix, Bread Mix, Brownie Mix, Multi-Purpose Flour Mix, Pancake Mix, Muffin Mix and Chocolate Cake Mix.

King Arthur Flour boldly states the following message on their website, “Our award-winning gluten-free mixes are the best you’ll ever taste.”  Their tagline is "King Arthur Flour gluten-free mixes – a taste the whole family will enjoy!”

We tested them.  The verdict?

These gluten-free mixes are as good as advertised. Both children and adult tasters agreed they are spectacular.

Udi’s Gluten Free Buns and Ancient Grain Breads

July 14th, 2011 by Cinde Shields

Udi's Gluten Free is launching their NEW line of Hamburger Buns, Hot Dog Buns and two varieties of Ancient Grains Breads this month... just in time for your summer BBQs!  I have been waiting for what seems like a very long time for Udi's Gluten Free to make buns; I figured that since their bread is soft, delicious and doesn't need toasting that their buns would be superior to others on the market.  I was right.

My family sampled Udi's new gluten free buns and Udi's new gluten free Ancient Grain Breads and they were a hit!  My daughter enthusiastically announced "I love Udi's Hamburger Buns" at the dinner table; I especially liked them toasted on the grill.  I was impressed by how (more…)

Ilise Ratner Gluten Free Works

I love to do research!  And in the gluten free industry that means sampling gluten free food.

Today I am particularly happy to be sampling Joan’s GF Great Bakes products recently introduced to the market; specifically the multi-grain English muffins.  She is updating her delicious line, which includes bialy’s, Italian bread, bagels, English muffins, Scicilian pizza, corn toaster muffins, chocolate chip cookies and calzone, by adding double chocolate muffins, crumb cake, and multi-grain English muffins.

And Joan has really has done it again.  I am a proponent of healthy gluten free living and in large part those of us that are gluten intolerant (Celiac Disease, gluten sensitivity) have taken whole wheat out of our diets and are left with low-fiber, low-nutrient, dense food.  Joan’s multi-grain English muffins are made with 3 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber (amaranth, flax seed meal, organic buckwheat, and fortified with iron, vitamins A, B2, B6, B12, and D3, Calcium, Folic Acid) and (more…)

gluten-free almond butterJune 29th is National Almond Butter Crunch Day. Almond butter is a great way to get that good, healthy fat.  There are many varieties of almond butter on the market and most of them are gluten-free.

All of the above listed almond butters are very good, but if I had to choose my favorite, I would have to go with (more…)

Gluten Free Pizza Crust Monstrosity

Any idea what this monstrosity is?

Nope?

This one should be easier:

Gluten Free Pizza Crust Venerdis

That's right. They're both pizza bases.

Gluten Free Pizza Base

It tastes great, really...if only I could get it off the paper!

I know what you're thinking. "How on earth did she manage to make such horrible looking pizza bases?" (more…)

I asked a few celiac friends if they had noticed a change in Udi's bread. They all answered with the same statement; "Yes, it's full of holes!"  I emailed Udi's a few times, but never heard back from them. So I did what all good little bloggers do and posted a picture on my blog.

Udi's Gluten Free BreadI have no idea how many people have complained to Udi's about their hollow bread, or if they are taking measures to correct it. They certainly have not asked for my two cents (imagine that!). But as a celiac with a nutrition and food science background I know that if you add too much yeast or baking powder in relationship to the flour; or you (more…)

hamburger helper gluten-free

Hamburger Helper is No Longer Gluten-free!!

It has been a little over a year since General Mills launched gluten-free Hamburger Helper and already it has been changed.

Hamburger Helper will no longer be gluten free because it is going to be processed in a different manufacturing facility that cannot be guaranteed to be free from cross contamination.  The newly processed Hamburger Helper will not have the 'gluten free' label, but will be labeled "may contain wheat".

I never tried any of the varieties of gluten-free Hamburger Helper because the flavor options weren't all that interesting to me, they were loaded with salt and it is frankly (more…)
