I would like to first thank Bob’s Red Mill for making this possible. Their products are awesome in taste and quality, and that is why I am truly a fan! I never would have thought that I could make absolutely the best cake donuts both gluten free and vegan before this. I mean, let’s be honest – there is not a lot of vegan and gluten free online. You search online and you find gluten free donuts – with eggs. You find vegan donuts – with (more…)
Yesterday was the start of Passover. Although I am a catholic girl, and quite honestly know next to nothing about this Jewish holiday, I do know one thing. This is the time of year where you can often find matzo stocked on the shelves of supermarkets.
In elementary school we would always learn about the various traditions of each holiday, and I always looked forward to when my mom would bring home matzo for my brother and me. We would eat it plain, with butter, or my mom’s personal favorite with (more…)
This year Passover is from sundown on March 25 through April 1, which is great news for those who eat gluten free because a number of gluten-free products have started arriving on store shelves that are only available during Passover. Crackers, bars, macaroons, and cereal are the newest addition to the Manischewitz line of gluten-free products.(more…)
When you are looking for an elegant dish that you can serve to both adults and kids, try this one. The recipe is courtesy of Aida Mollenkamp from her book “Keys to the Kitchen” (see the interview and blog post here). I made it for Christmas Dinner this past holiday and everyone raved.
Now, if you notice, the recipe is far from dairy-free so it was off-limits for my daughter (however, there are dairy substitutes below). I didn’t really think it was going to be her thing, so after sauteing the chicken, I put some aside for her and proceeded with the recipe. If you know me, I’m not one to make two meals but I do accommodate her special diet by being just a little creative. I promise, it’s possible.
After reviewing Aida’s book, this one really stuck out. However, being The Family Chef, I had to put my own spin on it and make it a bit more family friendly. It’s naturally gluten-free and absolutely delicious. If you need some of your own keys in the kitchen, check out Aida’s book.
I can’t say that I’m lucky enough to have a Valentine this year (unless you count my two girlfriends that are going to binge eat chocolate with me), but I think the below tips are useful for anyone that is looking to treat their gluten-free Valentine to a special day. (more…)
I recently attended a gluten, dairy, and soy-free cooking class at Williams-Sonoma at The Forum in Norcross. All of the recipes we sampled were quite tasty, but the Apple Spice Hummus was ‘smack you lips’ fantastic. I have never had what I deem to be dessert hummus before and one that was also healthful, so I just had to share. (more…)
Our gluten-free macho nacho makes a hefty appetizer for a crowd or a crunchy good entree for smaller gatherings.
Loaded with 3 layers of gluten-free corn tortilla chips, gluten-free seasoned ground beef, lots of veggies, cheese, fresh cilantro and spicy jalapeno this dish is always a half-time hit.
Let me preface this post by noting that Valentine’s day is not a holiday I, personally, subscribe to. The cards, the flowers, the mush, the grand gestures, and all the things that some expect of this day…none of that is really my jam. So, last year, after I requested no frills or fancy dinners or grand gestures, my boyfriend, Mike, presented me with a terracotta pot with a yellow lily and some dirt in it. (Read: don’t scoff yet…) Upon further inspection, it turned out that the “dirt” was finely crushed chocolate cookie bits covering a blue Solo cup filled with his gluten-free version of cookies and cream ice cream (my absolute favorite) that he had mixed and made himself. This gesture seemed small to some in my life, but to me, the girl who hadn’t had cookies and cream ice cream in almost two years, it was the grandest gesture of them all.
Betsy’s Bakery in Camp Hill, PA
That one grand gesture, when someone went out of his way to make sure that I could eat what I loved and not get sick is why the the candlelight dinner at Betsy’s Bakery in Camp Hill, PA is so important. This little bakery is hosting a reservation-only, gluten-free candlelight dinner on Valentine’s day this year. Taking your gluten-free sweetie to this dinner may be the gesture they’ve been looking for if you haven’t quite mastered the gluten-free vibe in the kitchen, or if you’re tired of going out to eat at the same “safe” restaurants all the time.
