Do you ever wonder where you can buy gluten-free grains and flours for a discount? Check out your local ethnic markets for terrific prices and variety.

One of the most frustrating aspects of being on a gluten-free diet is the cost of food.  Whether you are buying a prepared food or a bag of flour, the prices seem to be higher than “regular” food.

Next time you drive past an ethnic market or grocery store, stop in and see what they have to offer. Asian markets offer various rice flours.  Middle Eastern and Indian markets provide a wide variety of bean flours and alternative grains.  (more…)

Allergies Lead Churches to New Practices

The Rev. Bill Miller-Zurell was recently presiding at Communion, moving from congregant to congregant, offering the body, offering the blood, until he got to a little boy who, seeing the piece of bread, stopped the pastor short.

“He asked me if there were any nuts in it,” said Miller-Zurell, who leads New Hope Lutheran Church in Columbia. “His mom, who was standing behind him, made him. And he only took it after I assured him that there were no nuts.” (more…)

Isaiah Mustafa, the actor build best known for his impressive build, good humor and over-the-top bravado in the Emmy-nominated Old Spice commercials, recently revealed the diet he follows to achieve his chiseled physique on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

According to Mustafa, celebrity trainer Tony Horton has him on a diet that contains no alcohol, caffeine, processed sugar, animal products or gluten. Horton is the producer of the wildly popular workout videos, P90X.

Smoothie King Offers Gluten-free Choices

The idea for Smoothie King started back in the late 1960′s in the home of Steve Kuhnau.  Kuhnau was trying to remedy his allergies and low blood sugar and began to experiment with blending fruits, nutrients and proteins in a blender.  In 1973, Kuhnau opened a health food store selling his smoothies & vitamins and Smoothie King was born.  Smoothie King has grown to over 600 locations in the US and Seoul, Korea.  Smoothie King’s mission is “To relentlessly influence and help more & more people achieve a healthier lifestyle.”   (more…)

Breakfast is one of the easiest meals to make at home, but it also the one this Examiner used to enjoy ordering out.  It seems now that breakfast is the one meal with limited gluten-free choices, so we tend to eat this meal at home.  Who can afford to spend more than $10 for eggs, bacon and potatoes when they can be prepared at home for a fraction of the cost. 

Brunch menus tend to vary, but when we go out to brunch we are looking for more than just egg dishes, meat, potatoes and fruit.  A traditional brunch menu should offer a gluten-free version of what you would normally expect: pancakes, toast, French toast, eggs Benedict, (more…)

Delicious food doesn’t always have to contain gluten—I swear! First, it is important to decide what is most important to you. If baked goods are your thing then you need to stock your pantry with all the essentials to make what you want. Here is a great gluten free pantry list I was given by a Certified Nutritionist:

Arby’s offers up gluten-free menu

Over the past few years more & more restaurants have been adding gluten-free menus to their repertoire.  This is a much welcomed change to people who have had to follow the diet for any period of time.  Simply being able to order off of the menu and not bring food in from the outside is a pleasure.  

Arby’s is the latest establishment in this explosion of gluten-free menus.  Arby’s has multiple meat items, several salads, drinks & even shakes on the menu.  The French fries and potato cakes are off limits due to cross-contamination issues; sharing the deep fryer with chicken fingers, chicken patties and mozzarella sticks makes them unsafe.
